Everything was working smoothly. After update of windows updates all of a sudden my touchpad is not working at all. After checking on device manager it shows as the photo i have included here.. I2C HID device with warning sign. It also happened before with last update of windows but after reinstall of Serial IO driver it was resolved. But this time I tried all related drivers multiple times, also tried power reset with pressing power button for 30-60 sec but nothing is working. In the property under general it's showing this message "his device cannot start. (Code 10)

A request for the HID descriptor failed. This typically occurs when there is a problem with the device firmware.

Please contact the system manufacturer for further assistance." I am really pissed of with such issue and spent whole one day but no solution yet.

Seeking for expert opinions for this issue. Could it be related with windows update?

    Hi saeed,

I can see why this is frustrating, especially since you have already reinstalled the Serial IO and related drivers several times and performed a full power reset.

The timing suggests that a recent Windows update may have exposed the problem, but the current information does not confirm that the update itself caused it. Since the same issue occurred before the latest update, it would be helpful to narrow down whether Windows is still detecting the touchpad controller correctly.

Could you please check the following?

    • Is Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad still available, or has the Touchpad section disappeared?
    • Under Device Manager > System devices, does the Intel Serial IO I2C Host Controller show any warning icon or error?
    • Does Lenovo Vantage offer any pending BIOS/UEFI, firmware, chipset, or Serial IO updates for your exact machine?

As you have already reinstalled the relevant drivers, I would avoid repeatedly uninstalling the same I2C HID device for now. Instead, install any model-specific platform updates offered through Lenovo Vantage and check Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates for any available driver update.

If a restore point from before the problem began is available, you can also try System Restore by pressing Win + R, entering rstrui.exe, and selecting a restore point created before the touchpad stopped working. This rolls back recent system and driver changes without deleting personal files.

If the I2C HID device continues to show Code 10 after these checks, the next step would be to contact Lenovo Support with the exact error message and the device serial number, as Lenovo would need to check the model-specific BIOS, firmware, or touchpad controller package.

Please let me know what appears under System devices and whether the Touchpad page is still present in Settings. Thank you so much for your understanding.

Yes. A Windows update can trigger a driver conflict, but the specific Code 10: “A request for the HID descriptor failed” points to a HID over I2C problem, which is commonly tied to device firmware, ACPI/device configuration, or the touchpad/I2C driver stack.

Since reinstalling the Serial IO driver and doing a power reset already did not help, use this order:

    1. Reinstall the I2C HID device from Device Manager
      • Open Device Manager.
      • Find I2C HID Device under Human Interface Devices.
      • Right-click it and select Uninstall device.
      • Restart Windows.
      • Windows should reinstall the driver automatically.
    2. Update the touchpad driver through Windows Update first
      • In the taskbar search box, type check for updates.
      • Open Check for updates.
      • Under Windows Update, select Check for updates.
      • Install any available updates, including driver updates.
      • This is the recommended method for touchpad driver updates.
    3. If needed, update through Device Manager
      • In Device Manager, locate the touchpad or I2C HID-related device under Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices.
      • Open the device, go to the Driver tab, select Update Driver, and follow the prompts.
    4. If the touchpad still fails, reinstall the touchpad driver
      • Reinstalling the touchpad in Device Manager can force the latest driver to download from Windows Update.
      • The touchpad may appear under Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices.
    5. If the device still shows Code 10 with HID descriptor failure, escalate to Lenovo
      • Microsoft’s HID over I2C guidance states that descriptor failure means the device firmware returned an invalid HID report descriptor, or there is a firmware/configuration issue.
      • If the device is present in Device Manager but cannot start, that is no longer a normal driver-refresh case.
      • The next action is to contact the system manufacturer to investigate firmware/device configuration.

    Important detail for this error:

    • “A request for the HID descriptor failed” is associated with HID over I2C descriptor/firmware problems.
    • If a HID I2C device is missing or misconfigured, Microsoft documentation also points to incorrect ACPI configuration such as wrong _CID, incorrect device characteristics, incorrect HID descriptor address, or GPIO interrupt configuration. Those are manufacturer-side issues, not normal end-user settings.

    Given the symptoms:

    • It may have been exposed by Windows Update.
    • But the error itself indicates the root cause is likely in the Lenovo touchpad firmware, ACPI/device configuration, or the OEM I2C/touchpad driver package rather than a simple Windows UI setting.

If uninstall/reinstall in Device Manager and Windows Update do not restore the device, the supported next step is Lenovo support for updated firmware/BIOS/touchpad package investigation.
