A BitLocker recovery key is a 48-digit code. If the key does not appear at the link, check these locations:
- On the BitLocker recovery screen, note the first 8 digits of the recovery key ID. This helps match the correct key.
- If the device uses a Microsoft account, sign in from another device and look for the matching key ID at https://aka.ms/myrecoverykey.
- If the device was ever connected to a work or school account, check https://aka.ms/aadrecoverykey, then go to Devices and select View BitLocker Keys.
- Check whether the key was printed when BitLocker was turned on.
- Check a USB flash drive if the key was saved there.
- If someone else set up the device or turned on BitLocker, the key might be stored in that person’s Microsoft account.
Important facts:
- Microsoft Support cannot retrieve, provide, or recreate a lost BitLocker recovery key.
- If the device is managed by an organization, the IT department may be able to retrieve it.
- If the key cannot be found, the remaining option is to reset the device using Windows recovery options. This removes all files.
