Hello,

I have an HP Laptop 15s-gr0009au that originally came with genuine Windows 10 Home.

Recently, I replaced/reinstalled the storage and performed a clean installation of Windows 10 Home using official Microsoft installation media.

Windows is now showing:

Error code: 0xC004F213 “Windows reported that no product key was found on your device.”

I also tried the Windows Activation Troubleshooter and selected “I changed hardware on this device recently.” It says:

“We can’t find any devices linked to your Microsoft account that can be used for reactivating the device you’re using right now.”

I previously had Windows 11 Pro installed, but it was showing as Volume/KMS activation, so I do not want to use a KMS activator or an unofficial product key.

I want to recover/reactivate the original genuine Windows 10 Home license that came with this HP laptop.

Could someone please help me determine whether the original OEM Windows license can be recovered or reactivated?

Laptop model: HP Laptop 15s-gr0009au Product number: 21X34PA Original OS: Windows 10 Home

Thank you.

I need to check the original licence pre-installed on that device for you, to provide you with the best solution.

    1

Click your Start Button, type cmd then right click Command Prompt and choose 'Run as Administrator'

Run or paste this command and hit Enter:

    slmgr.vbs /dlv

Please post a screenshot of the resulting dialog

    2

Download the free ShowKeyPlus app from the Microsoft Store.

Please provide a screenshot of that app window and please hide your product key in the screenshot.

0xC004F213 means Windows cannot find a product key on the device. Since the laptop originally came with Windows 10 Home and only the storage was replaced, the storage change alone should not remove the original OEM license. A substantial hardware change such as a motherboard replacement is the kind of change that can prevent Windows from locating the license.

    Use this path:

    1. Confirm the installed edition is Windows 10 Home.
      • If a different edition is installed, activation will fail.
      • Microsoft states that using a product key for a different edition causes activation problems, and reinstalling the correct edition may be required.
    2. Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
      • Run Troubleshoot again.
      • If Windows detects a valid digital license for a different edition, it will tell that and provide instructions.
    3. If there was a genuine product key previously used on this device, in Activation select Change product key and enter that 25-character key.
    4. If the device was repaired or rebuilt and a different version of Windows was installed during that process, reinstall the original version of Windows that came with the PC and re-enter the original product key if available.
    5. If the issue is tied to a substantial hardware change, use the reactivation path from Activation > Troubleshoot and the option to reactivate after a hardware change. Microsoft notes this works when the Microsoft account was linked before the hardware change.
    6. If Windows was preinstalled and this is the first activation failure after reinstalling, contact the device manufacturer.

    What applies to this case:

    • Replacing the storage device is not identified as the kind of hardware change that normally requires a new license.
    • The failed troubleshooter result suggests there may not have been a Microsoft account-linked digital license available for transfer.
    • Because the laptop originally shipped with Windows 10 Home, the key point is to keep the installed edition on Windows 10 Home and avoid any Pro, Enterprise, or volume/KMS activation path.
    • If the motherboard was also changed at any point, Microsoft states a new license may be required for devices that came with Windows preinstalled.
