We are experiencing a reproducible issue where Microsoft Edge stops accepting all touchscreen input after additional tabs are opened or you click a couple of times on taskbar.

When the problem occurs, users cannot:

  • Scroll webpages using the touchscreen
  • Select browser tabs using touch
  • Select the address bar
  • Select favourites
  • Use the Back or Forward controls
  • Interact with webpage controls using touch

Microsoft Edge continues to respond normally to the touchpad, mouse and keyboard. Touch functionality elsewhere in Windows remains available.

Changing focus to another application and then returning to Edge temporarily restores touchscreen functionality.

The issue does not occur in Google Chrome under equivalent testing.

Testing confirmed that reverting an affected device to Microsoft Edge version 152.0.4191.53, which was in use on 27 August 2026, resolves the issue. This indicates a possible regression in a subsequent Microsoft Edge release.

Focus toggle: Alt+Tab away and back, or tap the taskbar icon. You already found this restores touch temporarily.

Hardware acceleration: turn it off in edge://settings/system and retest. This often changes input and compositor behaviour.

Clean profile: run msedge.exe --guest or use a new profile with no extensions. That rules out extensions.

Flags: check edge://flags for touch or pointer-event entries and test one at a time.

Pause the update: on managed machines, pin the version with the Edge update policy TargetVersionPrefix and RollbackToTargetVersion. Test this on one device first.

    Getting it fixed

Send feedback from Edge itself with Alt+Shift+I. Include the version, edge://version, the repro steps and the finding that 152.0.4191.53 works.

This matches a known Edge regression introduced after 152.0.4191.53.

The closest documented fix is in Edge Stable 153.0.4234.46, which states that it fixed an issue where some web applications became unresponsive during user interaction and the affected browser window froze and stopped responding to mouse or keyboard input. For cases that continue after updating to the latest Stable version, the documented next step is to contact Microsoft Support to confirm whether additional fixes are required.

Based on the documented Surface and Windows guidance, the practical validation path is:

    1. Update Edge to the latest Stable build available and retest.
      • The issue was resolved by rolling back to 152.0.4191.53, which supports the regression finding.
      • A later Stable release includes a fix for unresponsive interaction behavior.
    2. Check whether touch works outside Windows by testing in UEFI.
      • Shut down the Surface.
      • Press and hold Volume Up, then press Power until the Microsoft or Surface logo appears.
      • In UEFI, test touch input.
      • If touch fails in UEFI, the device likely has a hardware failure and needs service.
      • If touch works in UEFI, the problem is more likely Windows or the touch driver.
    3. Reinstall the touchscreen driver if UEFI touch works.
      • Do not do this on Surface Pro X. On that device, uninstalling drivers can require a full reset to restore them.
      • Open Device Manager.
      • Expand Human Interface Devices.
      • Uninstall Intel(R) Precise Touch Device.
      • Uninstall HID-compliant touch screen. If two entries exist, uninstall both.
      • In Action, select Scan for hardware changes.
      • Restart if needed. When connected to the internet, the touchscreen driver should download and install automatically.
    4. Install Windows and Surface updates.
      • In the Surface app, expand Help & support to check update status.
      • Select Check for updates to open Windows Update and install available updates.
      • On Windows 10, also install optional updates if offered, then restart.
    5. If touch still fails only in Edge after updating, treat it as an Edge product issue and escalate to Microsoft Support.
      • The documented Edge release note explicitly says customers who still experience similar symptoms after updating to the latest Stable version should contact Microsoft Support.
    6. If touch problems also appear more broadly on the Surface, follow the Surface service guidance.
      • If touch does not respond on part or all of the screen, or multi-touch is inaccurate, the documented recommendation is to submit a service order.
      • If the device shows phantom or ghost touches, check for nearby electronic interference first; if that does not resolve it, submit a service order.

If a temporary mitigation is needed while validating the fix, the evidence provided supports staying on 152.0.4191.53 until the latest Stable build is tested.
