    Windows 11 Professionnal, 25H2, 26200.9168

I recommend reinstalling Windows 11 via Settings and performing an in-place upgrade. Here's how:

Go to Settings > System > Recovery.

    • In "Fix problem using Windows Update", click "Reinstall now".
    • This will download Repair Upgrade and reinstall Windows similar to an In-Place Upgrade, preserving your apps, files, and settings.

The process will download and restart your PC several times. This may take some time, so please be patient and do not interrupt the process.

Let me know how it goes after.

    Thanks!

    Hi, @Michel Laliberté

To help narrow down the issue:

    1. May I know what other troubleshooting steps have you already taken? This will help me avoid recommending them again.
    2. Have you already checked whether you have any third-party antivirus software running?

If you haven't tried anything yet please start by:

First, make sure there's no third-party antivirus software active that might be interfering with the update process:

    • Open the Windows Security app.
    • Click the "Settings" (gear icon) in the lower left.
    • Under Security Providers, click "Manage Providers".
    • Verify if Microsoft Defender Antivirus is the active antivirus and Windows Firewall is the firewall.
    • If not, please uninstall the third-party antivirus, restart your PC, and check again at Settings > Windows Update.

If issue persists, run again the Windows Update Troubleshooter from Get Help app:

    • Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
    • Find Windows Update and click Run. This will open the Get Help app.
    • Select "I can't download, install, or uninstall an update" and click "Yes".
    • This will automatically identify and address any errors and restart the update process. This step is purely automatic.
    • Please continue to follow the prompt if the issue persists.

If the issue persists, please provide more details by answering my questions.

Click "Add comment" to let me know.

    Thanks!

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Retry the update once after a restart.
      • Restart Windows, then go to Start > Settings > Windows Update and try Check for updates again.
    2. Run component cleanup with DISM.
      • Select Start, type cmd.
      • Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
      • Run:
             dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

      • Wait for it to finish, restart the device, and try Windows Update again.
    3. If the failure continues, do a repair reinstall of the current Windows version.
      • A repair reinstall is recommended in similar cases for repeated update failures such as 0x800736b3 and 0x800f0983.
      • This repairs Windows installation files without removing personal files, settings, or installed apps.
      • One supported path is Start > Settings > System > Recovery, then under Fix problems using Windows Update, select Reinstall now.
    4. If the issue still persists after repair, contact Microsoft Support.

    Notes:

    • Optional preview updates do not need to be installed unless there is a specific need for them.
    • The DISM cleanup step is low risk, but the repair reinstall will take longer and should be done with the device connected to power.
