I purchased a retail Windows 8 license and later upgraded Windows. I now have a new PC with Windows 11 Home, but my retail product key will not activate it. Can I transfer my license to this PC?

    Hello

    The answer is no.

This is due to a recent policy change done by Microsoft. For the several years since 2016, there was a loophole where users could upgrade to Windows 10 and then 11 by using an old Windows 7 or 8 keys. The loophole has been now blocked by Microsoft. This is why you cannot install Windows 11 now with your Windows 7/8 license. No. A retail Windows 8 key is not a supported path to activate Windows 11 on a new PC.

Supported activation for Windows 11 requires either:

    • a digital license already associated with the device or Microsoft account, or
    • a valid 25-character product key for Windows 11

For a new PC with Windows 11 Home:

    • If Windows 11 came preinstalled, activation normally uses the key embedded with that device or the device’s existing license.
    • If activation is failing after major hardware/device changes, Start > Settings > System > Activation > Troubleshoot can help only when there is a valid digital license linked for reactivation after hardware change.
    • If the old entitlement originated from a Windows 8 retail license upgraded over time, the provided guidance indicates that this older key cannot be used to activate Windows 10/11 on a new device.

If the new PC does not already have a valid Windows 11 license, a new Windows 11 license is required.
