Data residency confirmation – Computer Vision Read API v3.2 in Qatar Central
Hi,
I need an official clarification regarding data residency for Azure AI Vision (Computer Vision), specifically the Read API v3.2.
We have a Computer Vision resource deployed in the Qatar Central region and call it through the regional endpoint:
https://qatarcentral.api.cognitive.microsoft.com/vision/v3.2/read/analyze
The service processes sensitive documents of customers in Qatar, such as Qatar IDs, driving licences, and vehicle registration documents. We need this information for a data-residency assessment under Qatar's Personal Data Privacy Protection Law (PDPPL).
For the Computer Vision Read API v3.2 in Qatar Central, could you please confirm:
- Is the submitted image processed exclusively within Qatar?
- The asynchronous Read API temporarily stores the submitted image and results while processing. Is that temporary storage exclusively within Qatar, and how long is it retained before deletion?
- Are the OCR results and any temporary processing data kept exclusively within Qatar?
- Can any customer-submitted image, OCR result, temporary data, or logs containing customer data be transferred or processed outside Qatar for any reason, including abuse monitoring, diagnostics, service improvement, failover/disaster recovery, or access by Microsoft support personnel located outside Qatar?
- Which official Microsoft documents or contractual commitments (for example, the Data Protection Addendum (DPA) or Product Terms) confirm Qatar-only processing and storage for this service?
We have already reviewed the "Data, privacy, and security for OCR" page on Microsoft Learn, which states that data is processed in the same region as the resource and deleted within 24 hours. We would appreciate confirmation that this applies fully to Qatar Central, along with any exceptions.
If needed, please escalate this to the Azure AI Vision service team.
Thank you.
