An Azure service that is used to set up labs for classrooms, trials, development and testing, and other scenarios.
A sandbox is an isolated Azure environment for testing and learning without affecting other environments. Common uses include self-learning, testing, development, proof of concepts, and experimenting with Azure services.
To use a sandbox for practicing Azure concepts:
- Use Microsoft Learn training modules that include sandbox exercises.
- In supported modules, the sandbox is built into the exercise.
- During the exercise, complete the activation steps such as eligibility checks, puzzles, and permission prompts.
- After activation, open the Azure portal and switch to the sandbox directory.
- Sign in to
https://portal.azure.com. - Select the account menu in the top-right corner.
- Choose Switch directory.
- Select the Microsoft Learn sandbox directory if it appears.

- If the portal flow does not work, use Azure Cloud Shell as a workaround.
- Open
https://shell.azure.comin a new browser tab after activating the sandbox. - Choose Bash.
- Select No storage account required.
- For Subscription, select Concierge Subscription.
- Select Apply.
- When the shell prompt appears, run the exercise commands there.
- Open
- Use the sandbox only for practice and learning scenarios.
- Sandbox environments are intended for hands-on learning, testing, development, and proof of concepts.
- They are not intended for production use.
- Keep the sandbox isolated and cost-aware if creating a broader Azure sandbox environment.
- A sandbox typically uses its own Azure subscription.
- It helps track costs and can be canceled when no longer needed.
If the goal is exam practice, some certification learning paths include practical exercises with sandbox access inside the modules.
