Startups: Companies that are in their initial stages of business and typically developing a business model and seeking financing.
A Microsoft for Startups-sponsored subscription can still require payment or become disabled when the sponsorship credits are not being applied to the active billing arrangement or when the subscription has transitioned to commercial billing.
Checks to perform:
- In the Azure portal, go to Cost Management + Billing → Billing profiles.
- Confirm the billing profile tied to the affected subscription.
- Review invoices and payment methods there.
- In the Azure portal, go to Subscriptions.
- Select the affected subscription and check whether it shows a commercial billing state such as past due or disabled.
- If the subscription was canceled by the Account Administrator or subscription Owner, use Reactivate.
- If a banner shows This subscription is disabled because payment wasn’t received or This subscription will be disabled for non-payment, select the banner.
- For eligible subscriptions, this opens Settle Balance or Invoice in the billing scope.
- Verify whether the Microsoft for Startups sponsorship is actually attached to the billing account under which the subscription was created.
- After sponsorship activation, new subscriptions must be created under the billing account where the credits are allocated.
- In Subscriptions → Add, select the billing account under which the credits are allocated.
- Check whether the startup has graduated from Microsoft for Startups or whether sponsorship benefits ended.
- After graduation or sponsorship end, Azure workloads continue running, but remaining Microsoft for Startups credits expire and the subscription transitions to a commercial billing arrangement such as pay-as-you-go.
Escalation path for this scenario:
- Because this is a sponsorship/billing issue, use Microsoft for Startups Program Support for program, benefits, sponsorship, entitlement, and redemption issues.
- In the Azure portal:
- Go to the startup homepage.
- Open the Overview tab.
- In Your Microsoft Team, select Get program support.
If the issue is specifically an Azure billing problem on the subscription itself, submit an Azure Product & Billing Support request in the Azure portal. Billing support is the correct path for investigating why charges were not covered by sponsorship credits.
If the subscription is disabled because of a past due balance and payment is made, reactivation can take up to 24 hours. After reactivation, resource management can still be delayed for up to 30 minutes.
