Why does Outlook keep moving emails back to the inbox?

For the last 3 days, not having changed anything on my system, all emails that I move or delete or mark as read, reappear the next time I restart the computer as unread in my inbox. The only answers I've found refer to the old Outlook.

Hi Angela,

Thank you for reaching out.

Having messages return to the Inbox as unread after they were moved, deleted, or marked as read indicates that the changes may not be synchronizing correctly with your mailbox. Since this only started three days ago without any intentional changes, please try the following checks:

  1. Test Outlook on the web
  • Sign in to Outlook on the web and move, delete, or mark a few test messages as read. Sign out, sign back in, and check whether those changes remain.
  • If the changes remain in Outlook on the web but not in New Outlook, the issue is likely with the New Outlook app.
  • If the messages also return in Outlook on the web, the issue is more likely related to the mailbox, an Inbox rule, or an organizational policy.
  1. Review your Inbox rules In New Outlook
  • Go to Settings > Mail > Rules.
  • Temporarily disable any rules that move, copy, redirect, or otherwise process messages, then test again.

  • New Outlook uses server-side rules, so a rule can continue running even when the desktop app is closed.
  1. Check for other connected devices or applications
  • Temporarily close Outlook on other computers and sign out of Outlook on mobile devices.
  • If your mailbox is connected to another email application, temporarily disconnect it and test again. This will help determine whether another device or application is writing older message states back to the mailbox.
  1. Repair New Outlook
  • Go to: Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Outlook (new) > Advanced options.
  • Select Repair first. If the issue continues, select Reset, open New Outlook again, and sign back in.

  1. Contact organization's IT admin

Because this is a business account, please ask your IT admin to verify whether a retention policy, retention label, or record-management setting is applied to your mailbox or Inbox. These policies can be configured at the mailbox, folder, or individual-message level.

In case you do not know who is your IT admin, kindly refer to this article: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support

I hope your issue gets resolved soon. Any updates would be greatly appreciated.
