How to edit cells on a downloaded Excel File from Pearson on Blackboard?

I downloaded an excel spreadsheet in order to complete a Pearson lab for blackboard. I am logged into my student account which has Microsoft 365, the sheet is not protected, and I even tried to download another copy of the file, and I still cannot edit the cells. Is there any other work around?

    Hi Wilson,

Thank you for sharing the details of your situation.

If you have the Excel desktop application installed, make sure that you have downloaded the spreadsheet to your computer and opened it using the desktop application, rather than opening it in the Blackboard preview or directly in your browser.

If the file is already open in the Excel desktop application, check the following:

    1. Look for an Enable Editing button in the yellow message bar at the top of Excel.
    2. Right-click the downloaded file, select Properties, and clear the Read-only option. If you see an Unblock option, select it, click Apply, and then reopen the file.
    3. In Excel, go to File > Account and confirm that the application is activated and does not display Unlicensed Product or Activation Required.
    4. Create a new blank workbook and check whether you can edit its cells.

If you do not have the Excel desktop application installed, you can upload the downloaded spreadsheet to OneDrive and open it in Excel for the web:

    1. Go to https://office.com/or https://www.microsoft.com/en/microsoft-365/onedrive/online-cloud-storage and sign in with your student account.
    2. Upload the downloaded spreadsheet to OneDrive.
    3. Select the uploaded file to open it in Excel for the web.
    4. If the file opens in Viewing mode, select Viewing in the upper-right corner and check whether you can switch to Editing.

You can also create a new blank workbook in Excel for the web to check whether you can edit its cells.

For reference, you may refer to: Basic tasks in Excel for the web

If you can edit a new workbook but not the Pearson spreadsheet, the issue may be specific to the downloaded file, unsupported features in Excel for the web, or the lab requirements. In that case, I recommend contacting your instructor or Pearson Support to verify that the correct editable file has been provided and whether the lab requires the Excel desktop application.

I hope this information is helpful. Should you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please feel free to share them in the comment below. I'm very happy to help.

Try these checks based on the most common Excel causes when cells cannot be edited:

    1. Check whether the file is opened read-only because it is locked.
      • If Excel says the file is locked, close Excel, restart the computer, and open the file again.
      • If the file is stored in a shared location, it may also be open by someone else. In that case, wait for the other person to close it, or open a separate copy with File > Save As.
    2. Check whether an object or control is covering the cell.
      • On the View tab, make sure Formula Bar is turned on.
      • In the Name box to the left of the formula bar, type the cell reference that cannot be edited, then press Enter.
      • Try editing the value in the Formula Bar. This works when a control or object is sitting on top of the cell.
    3. If the workbook came from a shared or unsupported location, save it to a coauthoring-supported location and format.
      • Save the file to OneDrive, OneDrive for Business, or SharePoint in Microsoft 365.
      • Make sure the file format is .xlsx, .xlsm, or .xlsb.
      • Coauthoring is not supported from server paths, local folders, or third-party cloud locations such as Dropbox, Box, or Google Drive.
    4. If the file is still locked for editing, request edit access if the workbook opens in view-only mode.
      • In Excel, select Viewing in the upper-right corner, then select Request more access.
      • Choose Ask to edit or Ask to review.
    5. If commands are grayed out because another user has the file open in the desktop app, create a new copy.
      • Use File > Save As and make changes in that copy.

If the problem is only with certain cells and not the whole workbook, the most likely workaround is editing the cell through the Formula Bar after selecting it from the Name box.
