Cannot send Outlook Calendar invites to addresses not in my Outlook Contacts

I am no longer able to send Outlook Calendar invites to addresses that are not in my Outlook Contacts.

If I add a non-contact address to the Required or Optional field in the mobile app, the app will just not recognize the address and it will clear it out from the field.

If I try the same thing from the desktop or web app, I can enter the non-contact address and save the event just fine. However, the invitee will never actually receive the invite.

I've only started observing this behavior in the last few weeks, so it appears to be due to a recent change. It is extremely annoying, and in the case of the desktop or web version, it is not at all obvious that invitees are never receiving their invitations.

    Good day Serene,

Just to gently clarify before going any further, this forum is separate from Microsoft Support. I don’t have the ability to access or investigate individual accounts or escalate the issue directly Microsoft Support because this is a user‑to‑user support forum.

Since you haven't mentioned whether the invitations are being sent to internal or external recipients, and the issue occurs in Outlook for Android, Outlook desktop and Outlook on the web, it is important to determine whether this is an invitation delivery issue or a broader email sending issue.

If the affected recipients are external users, please try the following:

1/ Send a regular email from the same account to one of the affected external email addresses.

2/ Ask the recipient to check their Inbox, Junk Email.

If the regular email isn't received, the issue is related to outbound email delivery. If the regular email is delivered successfully but meeting invitations aren't, then the issue is specific to calendar invitations.

In that case, I recommend contacting your organization's IT administrator so they can verify whether the invitation was processed successfully.

Note: In case you do not know who is your IT admin, kindly refer to this article: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support

Your administrator can perform a Message Trace by following these steps:

1/ Open the Exchange admin center > Go to Mail flow > Message trace.

2/ Search using the meeting organizer as the sender and the affected recipient as the recipient.

3/ Review the results to see whether the invitation was Delivered, Failed, Blocked, Pending or Quarantined.

4/ Your administrator can also check for any sending restrictions by opening the Microsoft Defender portal, navigating to Review > Restricted entities and confirming that the sending account isn't restricted.

You can share the following documentation with your administrator:

Message trace in the new EAC in Exchange Online | Microsoft Learn

Remove blocked users from the Restricted entities page - Microsoft Defender for Office 365 | Microsoft Learn

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out at any time.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.
