Dear Microsoft Office Community

I do not know how you can help me with this problem converting my MSO Publisher file into MSO Word, since Microsoft claimed this is possible, by first making the file into a PDF, then convert it to MSO Word

The majority of my work is missing, out of shape and images lost.

I configured the file as a book, with front and back cover.

I have spent a few years collecting the information a putting it all together.

I have saved all of the files, each in their application.

MSO Publisher is retiring next month, which starts tomorrow

In the article Allan referenced, Microsoft actually is quite clear about the conversion limitations because this conversion prioritizes preserving texts.

I assume your PDF file alone is ok, but it is the Word file that's off, right?

If so, Adobe Reader Reader cannot edit the PDF file, you would need the Adobe Acrobat Pro in order to edit the PDF file as it is, without compromising layout/image, etc.

    Hi @JeffreyTimothyValerie-8472

What you’re seeing is expected with this conversion method, although Microsoft’s retirement guidance could make that limitation clearer.

Microsoft’s official process is to save the Publisher file as a PDF and then open the PDF in Word. However, the resulting Word document is optimized for text editing, and its layout may differ significantly when the publication contains many graphics.

A PDF is a fixed-layout format. It records where text, pictures, and graphics appear on each page, but it doesn’t necessarily preserve their structural relationships as paragraphs, columns, linked text boxes, or other editable objects. Word must reconstruct those elements, so complex Publisher layouts, images, frames, page borders, and book-style pages may move, disappear, or be converted incorrectly.

Unfortunately, there's no Microsoft-supported method that guarantees a lossless, fully editable conversion from .pub to Word.

Before Publisher access ends, I recommend:

    • Keep backup copies of every original .pub file.
    • Export the completed book to a high-quality PDF. This should be treated as the preserved viewing and printing copy, not as an editable replacement. Microsoft describes PDF as a read-only format intended for sharing and high-quality printing.
    • Preserve the original photographs, illustrations, and other source files separately.
    • For a future editable version, create a new Word document, manually transfer the text, and rebuild the layout using the PDF as the visual reference. The PDF-to-Word conversion may recover some text, but don’t rely on it to preserve the book’s design.

For Microsoft 365 subscribers, Publisher becomes inaccessible after October 1, 2026. Perpetual Publisher installations can continue to operate, but Microsoft support for those versions ends on October 13, 2026.
