An Azure service that is used to provision Windows and Linux virtual machines.
The subscription cannot be checked directly here, but the supported VM size and region can be identified from the subscription itself.
For Azure for Students, NotAvailableForSubscription usually means the VM size is restricted for that subscription in the selected region, even if quota appears available. Student subscriptions can also have region restrictions.
Use these steps:
- In Azure Portal, go to Create a virtual machine.
- Under Region, choose one of the regions allowed by the student subscription.
- Under Size, select See all sizes to view only sizes currently available for that subscription and region.
- If the wanted size does not appear, try another allowed region or another VM family.
To check available sizes by CLI for a region:
az vm list-sizes --location <region> --output table
To check whether a specific VM SKU is restricted for the subscription, use the SKU availability check. If the output shows NotAvailableForSubscription, that VM size cannot be used in that region for that subscription.
In Azure for Students, some VM SKUs or VM families can be limited. A practical workaround is to try a different region where the SKU may be available, or use an alternative VM size.
If VM creation still fails for every size, the likely causes in the available guidance are:
- the selected VM size is unsupported for the subscription
- the region or zone does not currently have capacity
- the student subscription is restricted to specific deployment regions
If the portal shows no usable sizes in the selected region, switch to another allowed region and check See all sizes again. If needed, create a support request from Help + Support in the Azure portal.
