If the Word file was stored in OneDrive or SharePoint, AutoSave should save changes automatically and Version History can let earlier versions be viewed or restored. If the file was saved only on the device, AutoRecover and Recover Unsaved Documents are the main recovery paths.
Try this in order:
- Check whether the file is in OneDrive or SharePoint
- In Word, open File and look for Version History.
- If the file is there, open the most recent version and restore or copy the missing content.
- Recover unsaved copies in Word
- In Word, go to File > Info > Manage Document > Recover Unsaved Documents.
- If a file appears, open it and save it immediately with a new name.
- Check the AutoRecover location
- In Word, go to File > Options > Save.
- Copy the AutoRecover file location path.
- Open File Explorer, paste that path, and look for recovery files.
- If found, open them in Word and save a new copy.
- If Word shows Document Recovery
- Open the file with the most recent date and time.
- Use Save As to save the recovered file.
- If there are multiple versions, the newest timestamp usually has the latest changes.
- If the file was in OneDrive and now seems missing
- Check Version History for the file.
- Also check whether a copy with a device name suffix exists, then try earlier versions of that file.
- If Teams says the file does not exist
- The upload may be pointing to a file that was moved, renamed, deleted, or not fully saved to the original location.
- Recover the document in Word first, save it as a new file, then upload that new saved copy.
Important:
- If AutoSave was on for a OneDrive or SharePoint file, use File > Save a Copy before making more changes if a separate copy is needed.
- If the file closes unexpectedly and AutoRecover is enabled, Word can show a Document Recovery pane the next time the app opens.
If none of the recovery options show the file, use Contact technical support from Microsoft Support or the organization’s IT helpdesk if this is a school account.
