Azure Kubernetes Service: Unable to Create Cluster — Quota Issue in East US Region

Problem description

I am trying to create a new AKS cluster in the East US region, but the deployment fails during node pool creation. The error indicates an insufficient vCPU quota for the VM family used by the node pool.

Environment

Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), East US region, resource type: AKS cluster.

What I've already tried

I reviewed the activity logs to identify the specific error and checked that the required resource providers are registered. I attempted to update the deployment request but was unsuccessful. I have not increased any quotas or changed VM sizes or regions.

Current status

I am seeking guidance on how to verify and increase my vCPU quota in East US, or alternative solutions to successfully create the AKS cluster.

    Hello @Deploymate-6535

The error indicates that the subscription doesn’t have enough vCPU quota in East US for the VM family selected for the AKS node pool. Azure enforces both:

    • Total Regional vCPUs
    • VM-family vCPUs, such as the Standard DSv5 Family

The deployment must remain within both limits. You can verify the East US quota with this Azure CLI command:

az vm list-usage --location eastus --output table

Look for Total Regional vCPUs and the VM family identified in the AKS deployment error. az vm list-usage lists regional VM quota usage.

    To request an increase:

    1. Open the Azure portal and search for Quotas.
    2. Select Compute.
    3. Filter by the affected subscription and East US.
    4. Locate both the applicable VM-family quota and Total Regional vCPUs.
    5. Select Request increase and submit the required limit.

Microsoft provides separate request procedures for regional vCPU quotas and VM-family vCPU quotas. Quota requests are subject to Microsoft approval and regional capacity.

If Microsoft doesn’t approve an increase immediately, the documented alternatives are to reduce the requested node count, select a VM family with sufficient quota, or deploy in another supported region. Confirm that the replacement VM SKU meets the AKS node-pool requirements before changing it.
