    Dear devourfinefood,

If you have upgraded to Microsoft 365 Business Standard, you should be able to install and use the desktop Office applications on your iMac. If the apps are still not allowing you to edit files, please check the following:

Step 1: Sign in to https://portal.office.com/account/?ref=Harmony#subscriptions > In the Subscriptions tab, check whether the Business Standard subscription is assigned.

Step 2: Open a desktop Office app such as Word or Excel and verify that you are signed in with the same account.

Step 3: Sign out of all Office apps, restart your Mac, and then sign back in to refresh the license.

Additionally, if you are the administrator of the Microsoft 365 tenant, please check the Microsoft 365 Admin Center:

    • Go to Users > Active users > Select your user account > Under Licenses and apps, ensure Microsoft 365 Business Standard is assigned, and the Office apps service plan is turned ON.
    • If the license is assigned, try removing the license, wait a few minutes, and then reassign it.

If possible, I would also recommend uninstalling and reinstalling the Microsoft 365 apps on your iMac. Sometimes the local activation information does not refresh properly after a license change, and a clean reinstall can resolve activation and editing issues. For reference: Uninstall Office for Mac and Download, install, or reinstall Microsoft 365 or Office 2024 on a PC or Mac

Note: License changes can occasionally take up to 24 hours to propagate > Signing out of all Office apps, restarting the iMac, and then signing back in can help refresh the license.

If the issue still persists, to help me narrow down the issue, could you let me know:

    • What happens when you try to edit a document? Do you receive an error message, or are the apps opening in read-only mode?
    • Did you install the desktop apps from the Microsoft 365 portal?

As this is a community forum, I do not have access to your subscription or tenant information, but the details above will help us provide more specific guidance. Looking forward to your update.

If the subscription was upgraded to Microsoft 365 Business Standard, the desktop apps should be included. On Mac, the most common causes are that Office is still activated with the wrong license, the apps have not been updated, or the Mac cannot run the required Office version.

    Try this in order:

    1. Confirm the plan includes desktop apps Microsoft 365 Business Standard includes the desktop versions of Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.
    2. Update Office on the iMac In any Office app, select Help > Check for Updates. In Microsoft AutoUpdate, select Update or Update All. Restart the app after the update finishes.
    3. Check for wrong license activation on Mac If Office was previously activated with another license, or with a one-time Office for Mac purchase, the apps can stay in a limited state. In that case, remove the Office license files and reactivate so Microsoft 365 benefits apply.
    4. Sign in again with the upgraded account After reactivation, sign in with the work account that has the Business Standard license assigned.
    5. Check macOS compatibility If the iMac cannot support the required macOS version, the latest Office updates cannot be installed. In that case, the supported options are:
      • use Microsoft 365 on the web
      • install Office on another supported device
      • upgrade the device

If Outlook on Mac shows a license error specifically, the work account must have a license that includes desktop apps. Business Standard is one of the supported licenses.
