Controlling settings, permissions, and membership within Teams and channels
Good day Reshma,
The 400 plan limit is shared across the Microsoft 365 group that backs the Team, so plans created in different channels count toward the same limit. It isn't 400 plans per channel plus another 400 plans for the Team.
For tasks, the 9,000 task limit applies to each individual Basic plan, not to the entire Team. A Basic plan can contain up to 9,000 tasks, with up to 3,000 active tasks at the same time.
Tasks also cannot contain other Planner plans. You can add checklist items, notes, or references to a task, but you cannot create a child plan inside a task. Because of this, tasks don't increase the total number of plans owned by the Team.
If you need to organize work more efficiently, you can consider the following options:
Option 1: Reuse an existing plan in multiple channels
Open the target Teams channel.
Select + to add a tab.
Select Planner.
Choose an existing plan instead of creating a new one.
This approach lets multiple channels work from the same plan rather than consuming additional plan allocations.
Option 2: Use buckets instead of creating separate plans
Create a single plan for the project or department.
Create buckets for different workstreams or channels.
Organize tasks using buckets, labels, assignments, and due dates.
This helps keep related work in one plan while still maintaining clear organization.
Option 3: Use separate Teams or Microsoft 365 groups
Create separate Teams or Microsoft 365 groups for independent projects or departments.
Create new plans under the appropriate group.
This distributes plan ownership across multiple groups rather than placing all plans under a single Team.
