How to remove organization from managing my device

Hi,

I was logging into Microsoft Excel on my personal laptop for work when I accidentally pressed the "Allow my organization to manage my device."

How can remove the access for my employer to access my personal computer? I don't want the company managing my device as I use it for my personal transactions outside of work with sensitive data saved on it.

Thanks in advance for the help.

If that prompt was accepted, the device may have been added under Settings > Accounts > Access work or school and possibly registered or managed by the organization.

Use this removal path on the personal laptop:

    1. Open Settings.
    2. Go to Accounts > Access work or school.
    3. Select the work account that was added.
    4. Select Disconnect.
    5. Restart the laptop.

    Important effects:

    • Disconnecting removes the work or school account from the device.
    • If the device was registered or managed, access to work resources can be removed.
    • If the device was enrolled in management, removing it means the organization no longer manages it, but protected work data such as apps, files, or email on that device might no longer be accessible.

If the device also appears in Company Portal, remove it there as well:

    1. Sign in to the Company Portal website with the work or school account.
    2. Go to Devices.
    3. Select the personal device.
    4. Choose Remove and confirm.

If the account was only added to Windows and not fully managed, selecting Disconnect in Access work or school is the key step.

To avoid re-enrolling the device next time when signing in to Excel or other Microsoft 365 apps, choose No, this app only instead of allowing the organization to manage the device.

About privacy: linking or using the work account does not by itself give the employer access to personal Microsoft account preferences or personal search history. If the device is employer-provided or traffic is monitored by the organization, that monitoring is determined by the organization, not by account linking itself.
