Migration of DataBricks managed Azure Blob Storage accounts

I asked about this a year ago:

Microsoft Azure is migrating Azure V1 and BlobStorage accounts to V2, with a deadline of Oct 13 2026.

However, my accounts in this state are all accounts created (and managed) by Azure DataBricks.

I had assumed they would get migrated before this, but the deadline is approaching and my accounts are still BlobStorage.

Does anyone have any definitive guidance on what I should do with these accounts? Should I wait for the auto-migration or manually try to move them?

If the storage accounts are Databricks-managed DBFS accounts, manual action is not required and they should not be migrated manually.

    Definitive guidance:

    1. Identify whether the account is a Databricks-managed account.
      • These accounts are typically in a Databricks-managed resource group.
      • Most start with the prefix dbstorage.
      • A reliable confirmation is that the account is in a Databricks Managed Resource Group and has read-only permissions.
    2. If it is a Databricks-managed DBFS account, wait for the service migration.
      • Microsoft states that these accounts will be migrated to GPv2 automatically ahead of the October 13, 2026 retirement.
      • No action is required for those accounts.
    3. Do not manually migrate Databricks-managed DBFS accounts.
      • These accounts are used by Databricks for workspace operations.
      • They are read-only and service-managed.
    4. Only migrate accounts that are managed for workload use outside the Databricks-managed resource group.
      • Any other GPv1 or legacy Blob storage accounts under direct management should be upgraded to GPv2.

If the accounts are still BlobStorage today, that alone does not change the guidance. The deciding factor is whether they are Databricks-managed DBFS accounts in the managed resource group. For those, the documented action remains to leave them alone and allow the automatic migration.

    Hi @John Reynolds ,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

The storage accounts mentioned are Databricks-managed Blob Storage accounts (typically named with a dbstorage... prefix) that were automatically created when the Azure Databricks workspace was deployed. These accounts are considered service-managed resources and are part of the Databricks workspace infrastructure. Migration of Azure Blob Storage accounts created by Databricks.

    Recommendation

    • Do not manually migrate or modify Databricks-managed storage accounts unless explicitly instructed by Microsoft or Azure Databricks.
    • For Microsoft-managed resources, the expectation is that the owning service (Azure Databricks) will handle any required migration from legacy Blob Storage to GPv2 before the announced deadline. Migration of Azure Blob Storage accounts created by Databricks
    • Manually upgrading or changing the storage account configuration could introduce risk to the Databricks workspace and is not recommended without official guidance.
    • Continue monitoring Azure Databricks release notes, Azure Service Health notifications, and official Microsoft communications for any migration announcements.
