Hello. We understand there are some types of storage accounts that are being retired in October and for which ARM template deploys are now failing. We are a little confused though, reading the various articles, as to which storage account types will be supported moving forward.

Can you confirm that Premium Block Blob storage accounts will continue to be supported?

Thank you.

    Hi,

    Yes, Premium block blob storage accounts will continue to be supported and are unaffected by the upcoming retirement.

    These are Kind: BlockBlobStorage SKU: Premium_LRS or Premium_ZRS

    If you would like you may open Resource group explorer using below link:

    https://portal.azure.com/#servicemenu/Microsoft_Azure_Resources/ResourceManager/resourcegraphexplorer

    And then copy/paste below query from legacy blob storage account retirement article and click Run:

    resources
    | where type == "microsoft.storage/storageaccounts"
    | where sku.name in~ ("Standard_LRS", "Standard_GRS", "Standard_ZRS", "Standard_RAGRS", "Standard_RAGZRS")
    | where kind != "StorageV2"
    | extend Version = tostring(properties.siteProperties.propertiesid)
    | project name, type, tenantId, kind, location, resourceGroup, subscriptionId, managedBy, sku, plan, properties, tags, identity, zones, extendedLocation, Version

    In the results you will see list of legacy storage accounts.

    Thanks.

    Yes. Premium block blob storage accounts continue to be supported.

    What is being retired is called out separately under retired storage account types: Standard general-purpose v1, Blob Storage (legacy blob storage accounts), and Classic (ASM) storage accounts. Premium block blobs is listed as a current recommended storage account type, not a retired one.

    Key points:

    1. Premium block blobs is a current supported account type The storage account overview lists Premium block blobs as a recommended Azure Storage account type for block blobs and append blobs, especially for high transaction rates, small objects, or consistently low latency workloads.
    2. It is not in the retired account types list The retired list includes GPv1, legacy Blob Storage accounts, and Classic (ASM) storage accounts. Premium block blob accounts are not included there.
    3. It cannot be converted in place from a standard account If moving from a standard GPv2 account to premium block blobs, a new premium block blob account must be created and data migrated.
    4. Account type changes are not done in place Azure Storage account type cannot be changed after creation. To move to a different type, create a new account and copy data.

    So for long-term planning: Premium BlockBlobStorage accounts are supported moving forward. The October 2026 retirement guidance in the provided material applies to GPv1 and legacy Blob Storage accounts, not to Premium block blob accounts.
