I want to Migrate Data from existing Access 2021 database to an updated version of the same Access 2021 database

This is the same database.

The new database is an updated version with new forms.

The database application stays the very same, i.e Access 2021

    Hi @Joseph Holland

This happens because startup options and form properties are stored inside the database file itself, not in Access 2021.

    Your old database had:

    • A startup form configured

    Possibly Navigation Pane hidden

    Maybe AllowDesignChanges = No

Maybe Default View = Form View on forms

Your new database version may have:

    No startup form set

A form whose Default View is set to Design View

    A missing AutoExec macro

    A bypassed startup (SHIFT key)

A different Access Options configuration inside the file

So Access 2021 is behaving normally — the new database simply doesn’t have the same startup configuration as the old one. This happens because startup options and form properties are stored inside the database file itself, not in Access 2021.

Interestingly enough, if you HAD properly split this database prior to creating a new form in another copy, which forced the import of a form, you have had to do nothing. The new form would have been in the front end all along.

Can you be more specific about the reason for your concern?

On the surface, it should be really simple, so there must be something more behind your question.
Let's start with the basic question. Is the database properly split into Front End and Back End?

If it is, it should be a straightforward as linking the new front end to the current Back End.

What else is involved that hasn't yet been mentioned?

    Hi Joseph,

Since both databases were created with Access 2021 and the newer database primarily contains updated forms, could you please confirm whether the tables in the new database have the same names and field structures as those in your existing database?

If the table structures have remained the same, you may be able to import the data directly. To do this, open the new database and navigate to External Data > New Data Source > From Database > Access, then select the existing database. Access can import tables and other database objects from another Access database.

That said, if the new database already contains empty tables with the same names, importing the data directly will create additional copies of those tables rather than populate the existing ones. In that situation, a safer approach would be to import the data into temporary tables first and then use append queries to transfer the records into the appropriate tables.

Before making any changes, I strongly recommend creating backup copies of both databases so you can restore them if needed.

For additional guidance, you may find the following Microsoft resources helpful:

I hope this information helps. If you have any further questions or need help with anything else, please don't hesitate to reach out again.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

    Kind regards,
