Azure Content Safety blocklist inconsistent across backend clusters

Hello Azure Support,

We are experiencing inconsistent behavior with Azure AI Content Safety text analysis.

Resource details:

  • Resource: trimlink-resource
  • Region: East US
  • Endpoint: <endpoint>cognitiveservices.azure.com
  • API version: 2024-09-15-preview
  • Operation: POST /contentsafety/text:analyze

We use these text blocklists:

["Drugs", "Gambling", "Illegal_Content"]

The blocklists are visible through the list API and are returned successfully.

However, the same API key, endpoint, API version, request format, and blocklist names produce different results depending on the backend cluster:

Successful request:

Cluster: hyena-eastus-01
Status: 200
Request ID: 9aed0b3a-b73f-4c1b-8572-ba57e53b95e7

Failing request:

Cluster: hyena-eastus-02
Status: 400
Error: Blocklist with name Drugs not found, index = 0
Request ID: 38e0d260-40db-478f-89f9-5fa13ddc5cad

The failing response is:

{
  "error": {
    "code": "InvalidRequestBody",
    "message": "Blocklist with name Drugs not found, index = 0",
    "details": []
  }
}

The successful request returns normal analysis results:

{
  "blocklistsMatch": [],
  "categoriesAnalysis": [
    {"category": "Hate", "severity": 0},
    {"category": "SelfHarm", "severity": 0},
    {"category": "Sexual", "severity": 0},
    {"category": "Violence", "severity": 0}
  ]
}

The blocklist listing API returns all three lists, including Drugs, Gambling, and Illegal_Content. The issue appears to be inconsistent blocklist replication or availability between hyena-eastus-01 and hyena-eastus-02.

Please investigate and synchronize the blocklist configuration across the East US backend clusters.

    Hi @JUNED KHAN

    Glad to know that the original block-list issue has been resolved.

    Regarding the new Content Safety error, the logs indicate a 500 InternalError with the message “Service unavailable. Please try again later.” This is different from the previously reported block-list issue.

    As a few troubleshooting steps, you can try the following:

    1. Retry the request when the 500 error occurs. Microsoft documentation identifies 500/503 responses as transient failures where retrying with exponential backoff is recommended.
    2. Capture the Request ID and timestamp for each failed request. These are important for correlating the failure with the service-side telemetry.
    3. Check whether the issue is intermittent or consistently reproducible by retrying the same request with the same endpoint and configuration.
    4. Verify the Content Safety endpoint and API version being used. The Content Safety Analyze Text API requires a valid Content Safety endpoint and supported API version.
    5. Check the request size against the documented limits. For example, the Analyze Text API has a default maximum input length of 10K characters.
    6. If the issue continues, please share a recent failed Request ID, UTC timestamp, HTTP status code, region, and API version. These details will help with further investigation.

    For reference, Microsoft documentation:

    I Hope this helps. Do let me know if you have any further queries.
