As per Microsoft’s official migration guidance for NAS scenarios using Azure Data Box, the supported and recommended migration path. This means you can directly copy data to Azure Files via Data Box, and there is no requirement to stage data in Azure Blob storage.
Azure Data Box fully supports SMB-based data transfer to Azure Files, and during this process, NTFS ACLs, timestamps, and file attributes are preserved. This makes it the preferred option when maintaining existing permissions is important.
- Microsoft explicitly recommends using tools like Robocopy with appropriate flags to ensure full file fidelity (including permissions) during the copy process.
