Refresh Excel’s license while signed in with the Microsoft account used for the renewal, then fully close and reopen every Microsoft 365 app.
1. Confirm the renewed subscription is on the same account
- Close Excel and all other Office applications.
- Open Microsoft account → Services & subscriptions: https://account.microsoft.com/services
- Sign in with the account used to renew Microsoft 365.
- Confirm that an active, eligible Microsoft 365 home subscription appears.
If no active subscription appears, try any other Microsoft account that might have been used for the purchase. Excel cannot activate from an account that does not show the Office product or subscription.^1^
If the renewal was a physical retail card, boxed copy, or unused product key: payment alone does not start the subscription. In Excel’s renewal prompt, select Enter Key and redeem the key from the card or purchase email.[^2^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "A subscription notice appears when I open a Microsoft 365 application | Microsoft Support")
2. Force Excel to update the license
Windows
- Connect the computer to the Internet.
- Open Excel.
- Select File → Account.
- Under Product Information, select Update License.
- Sign in with the account confirmed above.
- Close all Microsoft 365 applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook, and then reopen Excel.
The license normally refreshes automatically, but a new purchase or entitlement can take up to 72 hours to appear; Update License requests it immediately. Afterward, File → Account → Product Information should display the licensed product.^3^
Mac
- Connect the Mac to the Internet and open Excel.
- On the macOS menu bar, select Excel → About Microsoft Excel.
- Select More Info… → Refresh License.
- Close every open document and quit all Microsoft 365 applications.
- Reopen Excel and test editing and saving.^4^
If Excel still says “Unlicensed Product”
On Windows 10 or 11:
- Open Microsoft’s activation guidance and start the Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter.
- Allow the page to open Get Help.
- Run it on the same PC where Excel is installed.
- Follow the prompts, restart Excel, and check File → Account again.^1^
Also check Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features. If multiple Office versions are installed, uninstall only the old or unused version, restart Windows, and sign in again. Multiple installations can conflict with activation.^1^
On Mac:
Use Microsoft’s license-removal procedure at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/how-to-remove-office-license-files-on-a-mac-b032c0f6-a431-4dad-83a9-6b727c03b193, then:
- Return to https://account.microsoft.com/services.
- Sign in with the account showing the active subscription.
- Select Install for Microsoft 365.
- Run the installer, open Excel, and sign in with that same account.^5^
Until activation is restored, the desktop apps can remain in reduced-functionality mode, allowing files to open or print but not be edited or saved. Excel for the web can be used temporarily.[^6^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "What happens when your Microsoft 365 subscription expires | Microsoft Support")
