downloading DOCX files from Word for the web

In Word for the web, the "Download a Copy" option under File → Create a Copy does nothing. No download starts and no file appears in Chrome downloads. This happens with all documents, including newly created ones, and also in Incognito mode. Downloading PDFs works, and downloading DOCX files directly from OneDrive works

This problem is being widely reported with the free Word online app lately, it seems to be a bug in that functionality in Word online, as you have indicated, you are able to download your docx file from your OneDrive - My Files section, that is the best option to use for any Office files created in the free online version of the Office apps until Microsoft resolve this problem on their servers.

In the meantime, the best option is to open Word online, select Help - Feedback - Report a Problem and report this bug to the Office developers there, that will prompt them to investigate the underlying cause of the problem.

Use the working OneDrive Download command for DOCX files while isolating and reporting the failure of Word for the web’s Download a copy command.

    Immediate workaround

    1. Return to the document’s folder in OneDrive.
    2. Select the document without opening it.
    3. Select … (Show more actions) → Download.
    4. Confirm that the .docx appears in the browser’s Downloads folder.

Microsoft documents this as a supported shortcut to downloading from inside Word for the web; it produces a local copy of the same cloud document.^1^

If the OneDrive desktop application is installed and syncing that folder, the DOCX may already be available locally. Changes made to that synchronized file are uploaded when OneDrive next connects.^1^

    Isolate the failing component

The expected Word workflow is File → Create a Copy → Download a copy, after which the file should be saved in Downloads.^1^ Because it fails for new and existing documents, while PDF export and direct OneDrive DOCX downloads work, this does not look like a damaged-document or general download-folder problem.

Since Incognito has already produced the same result, do not repeat cache, cookie, or extension troubleshooting first. Instead:

    1. Update Chrome to its current production version. Microsoft 365 supports the current version of Chrome.[^2^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Microsoft 365 system requirements | Microsoft Support")
    2. Open the same document in the current version of Microsoft Edge.
    3. Run File → Create a Copy → Download a copy.
    4. Interpret the result:
      • Works in Edge: the failure is specific to Chrome or its local policy/configuration. Keep using OneDrive or Edge, and report the behavior through Chrome support.
      • Fails in Edge too: treat it as a Word for the web account/service issue rather than continuing browser repair.

There are matching Microsoft Q&A reports where Word for the web’s save/download command does not start the expected download, but those reports do not contain an accepted or moderator-recommended resolution.^3^^4^

    Check service health or escalate

For a work or school Microsoft 365 account, ask an administrator to:

    1. Open Microsoft 365 admin center → Health → Service health.
    2. Check Office for the web for an active incident or advisory.
    3. If none is listed, open a support request and include:
      • The approximate UTC time of a failed attempt.
      • Chrome and Edge version numbers.
      • Confirmation that it affects new and existing documents.
      • Confirmation that PDF export and OneDrive DOCX download work.
      • Whether the failure reproduces in Edge.

Service health includes Office for the web and displays active incidents, advisories, and recent issue history; Service Support Admin and Helpdesk Admin roles can view it.^5^

For a personal Microsoft 365 account, use Contact Microsoft from Microsoft’s Office known-issues/support page.^6^
