Update Microsoft Store separately, because installing Windows updates does not install updates for Store applications.^1^
1. Update Microsoft Store
- Windows 11: Open Microsoft Store → Library → Get updates.
- Windows 10: Open Microsoft Store → See more (…) → Downloads and updates → Get updates.
- Allow any Microsoft Store update to finish, then restart the PC and try downloading the app again.^2^
2. Check the actual Windows version
Being fully updated can mean that all updates for the currently installed Windows release are installed—not necessarily that the PC has the feature release required by the app.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
winver and select OK.
- Note the Windows edition and version displayed.
If the message occurs with only one particular app, that app may not support the installed Windows version or device. Microsoft Store can hide or block installation for incompatible apps.^3^
If winver shows an older Windows 11 feature release that Windows Update has not offered automatically, the Windows Update Assistant can install the latest compatible feature update on x86/x64 PCs; it does not support ARM-based PCs.^4^
3. Refresh the Store cache
Since Windows Update is already complete, refresh the Store rather than checking for the same updates again:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
wsreset.exe.
- Select OK.
- Wait for the blank Command Prompt window to close and Microsoft Store to open automatically.
- Try the download again.^3^
4. Repair or reset Microsoft Store
If all Store downloads produce the same message:
- Open Start → Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Store and select More (…) → Advanced options.
- Select Repair and test the Store.
- If Repair does not work, return to the same page and select Reset.
Resetting clears the Store app’s local data, so you may need to sign in again.^5^
5. Check the Store installation service
If no apps can download after the reset:
- Press Windows key + S, enter
services.msc, and open it.
- Double-click Microsoft Store Install Service.
- If it is running, select Restart.
- If it is disabled, change Startup type to Automatic, select Start, and then OK.^6^
If the problem continues, record the exact message, error code, winver result, and whether it affects one app or every app. Those details determine whether the remaining issue is app compatibility, Windows release eligibility, or a damaged Store installation.
