If the account was hacked, use this recovery path:
- Run a full malware scan on the PC before changing anything.
- Open Virus and threat protection.
- Select Scan options > Full scan > Scan now.
- Try the Microsoft account hacked-account recovery flow.
- Use the sign-in helper tool. It asks for the email address or phone number and then provides self-help steps or the option to talk to an agent.
- If access is still possible, immediately change or reset the password.
- After the malware scan, sign in and change the password.
- If sign-in fails, use password reset.
- After regaining access, review account settings that attackers commonly change:
- Connected accounts
- Forwarding
- Automatic replies
- Check recent sign-in activity.
- Review the recent activity page to see when and where the account was accessed and report activity that was not recognized.
- Add or update security info.
- Add an alternate email address and mobile phone number on the Security basics page to improve recovery options.
- If the account is blocked because of unusual sign-in activity, it must be unblocked by resetting the password.
- If the security code or password-change process does not work, use the sign-in help path that includes a support option.
- Support agents cannot send password reset links or change account details for the account.
