Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Sign in to Services & subscriptions with each of your Microsoft accounts; the account that lists the paid Microsoft 365 subscription is the account you must use to activate Office—do not purchase another subscription.
Find the account that owns the subscription
- Close all Office applications.
- Open Services & subscriptions.
- Sign in with one of your possible email addresses.
- Look under Subscriptions and Cancelled subscriptions for Microsoft 365.
- Sign out of the website and repeat this check with every other personal email address you may have used.
- The correct account is the one where Microsoft 365 appears with the payment, expiration, or renewal details matching your purchase. If a subscription is not listed, that address cannot activate it.^1^
If you bought Microsoft 365 directly from the Microsoft Store while signed in, the account used during that purchase is permanently associated with the product.[^2^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Why do I need an account to sign in to Microsoft 365 or Office? | Microsoft Support")
Activate Office with that account
Once the active subscription is visible under the correct account:
- Open Word or Excel.
- Select File → Account.
- Sign out of the incorrect account.
- Close every Office application.
- Reopen Word and select Sign in.
- Enter the email address and password for the account that shows the active subscription.
Office remains activated while it is signed in with an account associated with the subscription.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Office for home")
If Office still reports Unlicensed Product, run the Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter on that same PC. It requires Windows 10 or later:
- Open Microsoft’s activation guidance below.
- Go to Step 4: Troubleshoot Microsoft 365 or Office activation.
- Start the Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter.
- Allow it to open Get Help, then follow the prompts.^1^
If the paid account says “Cancelled”
Check where the subscription was purchased:
- If the page provides Manage, Cancel, or Change payment, Microsoft manages the subscription.
- If those controls are missing or limited, it may have been purchased through Apple, Google Play, Amazon, or another retailer. Billing and renewal must then be handled by that provider.[^4^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Where can I manage my Microsoft 365 subscription? | Microsoft Support")
If Microsoft billed you directly, but the matching account still shows Cancelled despite the completed payment, this requires a billing-status correction rather than another purchase. Contact Microsoft Support:
- Go to Contact us and sign in with the account that made the payment.
- Select Microsoft 365.
- Choose Get Home support.
- Enter billing or paid subscription shows cancelled.
- Request live chat when offered.
- Have the October 13 order confirmation and payment proof available, but do not post an order number or payment details publicly.^5^
