Read-only Word: Text selection triggers the Office pop-up

Word displays “Use Office connected experiences” dialog whenever I select text in a read-only document (Windows, Microsoft 365 Family)

Hello Microsoft Support Team,

I have been experiencing a persistent and reproducible issue in Microsoft Word for Windows. I would like help identifying the exact feature or service that triggers this dialog when selecting text in a read-only document.

1. Problem description

Whenever I open a Word document, set its Windows file attribute to Read-only, and select any text inside the document, Word displays the following dialog:

“Use Office connected experiences”

The dialog instructs me to go to:

File → Account → Account Privacy

This happens simply by selecting text. I am not intentionally using any online search, translation, cloud-based editing, or other connected feature.

2. Environment

Subscription: Microsoft 365 Family.

Operating system: Windows.

The same Microsoft account is used on both computers.

Two computers reproduce the same problem:

Computer 1

Word Version 2607

Build 2028.2024

Click-to-Run

Current Channel

Computer 2

Word Version 2611

Build 2026.20034

Click-to-Run

Current Channel (Preview)

The issue occurs on both computers despite their different Word versions.

3. Troubleshooting already attempted

Disabled the connected experiences that analyze document content. The popup still appears.

Tested Word in Safe Mode. The issue still occurs.

Tested on a second computer using the same Microsoft account. The issue still occurs.

Confirmed that the problem is reproducible with read-only Word documents.

4. What I want to achieve

I do NOT want to disable all Office connected experiences as a workaround.

My requirements are:

Keep all Office connected experiences enabled.

Keep Word documents stored locally on the computer, with OneDrive synchronization enabled.

Do not force documents to open through online-only or network-based storage.

Selecting text in a read-only document should not trigger the “Use Office connected experiences” dialog.

5. Questions for Microsoft

Which exact Word feature, service, or component is triggered when a user simply selects text in a read-only document?

Why does selecting text initiate a connected-experience request?

Is this a known issue or bug in current Microsoft 365 Word for Windows versions?

Is there a supported way to disconnect this automatic trigger from text selection without disabling all connected experiences?

Can Microsoft provide an official fix, configuration setting, registry policy, or corrected build?

I have attached a screenshot of the exact dialog.

I would appreciate a technical explanation of the underlying cause and a permanent solution, rather than general advice to toggle privacy settings that I have already tested.

Thank you.

Since you are using both Chinese and English, I will use English for now because it matches the forum language. If you want me to use Chinese to communicate, please let me know. I will be happy to use the language you are comfortable with.

    Hello lp00102

Thank you for providing the detailed reproduction steps.

This does not appear to be the usual Word read-only, activation, or OneDrive storage issue. Word is opening the document correctly, but selecting text in a file carrying the Windows Read-only attribute appears to be incorrectly invoking a connected-experience component.

Since the same behavior occurs on two computers, with different Word builds, and even in Safe Mode, an add-in is unlikely to be responsible. It may instead be related to the Office privacy-consent state associated with the account or to a Word regression involving read-only files.

    Please try the following:

    1. In Word, open File > Account > Account Privacy > Manage Settings and confirm the connected-experience options you want to use are enabled.
    2. Close all Office applications, restart Windows, and sign back into Word.
    3. Open File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
    4. Create a new document in a local folder outside OneDrive, such as C:\Temp, and test it before and after applying the Windows Read-only attribute.
    5. If the pop-up appears only after that attribute is applied, run an Online Repair from Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft 365 > Modify > Online Repair.

Enabling connected experiences does not automatically move locally stored documents to the cloud. The storage location and AutoSave settings remain separate.

If the behavior continues after an Online Repair, there does not appear to be a documented setting that disables only this selection trigger. Please reproduce the issue and submit it through Help > Feedback > Report a problem, including the two Word version and build numbers and the fact that it also occurs in Safe Mode.

This will provide the Word product team with the diagnostic information needed to investigate it as a possible product bug.

Feel free reply back to this post if you need further assistance, I'll be happy to help.
