A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
That message indicates Office is not finding a valid license, so Word can open in reduced functionality mode or fail to let documents open normally.
Try this in order:
- Check whether Office is activated.
- If Word shows Unlicensed Product or another activation error, follow the activation troubleshooting steps in Unlicensed Product and activation errors in Office.
- When Office is not activated or the subscription has expired, documents may open only in reduced functionality mode, where files can be opened and printed but not edited or created.
- If the issue started recently on a Windows PC, install Windows updates.
- Open Start and search for Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install any available updates, then restart the PC.
- If Word still does not open documents, update device drivers that can affect Office startup.
- Check for updated video card, printer, mouse, and keyboard drivers from the device manufacturer.
- Uninstall and reinstall Office.
- Use the Microsoft uninstall troubleshooter to remove Microsoft 365, Office 2021, Office 2019, or Office 2016.
- Restart the computer when prompted.
- Then reinstall Office from the account used for the subscription or purchase.
- If documents open but only as read-only, also check these conditions:
- OneDrive storage full can prevent saving changes.
- An Unlicensed Product state can also cause read-only behavior.
- Restarting the computer, installing Office updates, and performing an Online Repair are listed troubleshooting steps.
If a specific file reports corruption, try:
- In Word, select File > Open > Browse.
- Select the file.
- Select the arrow next to Open > Open and Repair.
