Your shared Microsoft 365 Family benefit should appear after the remaining paid term of the cancelled Personal subscription reaches its expiry date; cancelling or disabling renewal normally does not end that paid term immediately, so no additional purchase is required.^1^
Check the transition status
- Sign in to Services & subscriptions using the same Microsoft account that accepted the Family invitation.
- Check the Personal subscription’s exact expiry date:
- If it still shows as active until a future date, wait until that date passes.
- Do not resubscribe or make another payment.
- After expiry, refresh Services & subscriptions. The Family entitlement should appear as a subscription shared by the owner.^2^
The accepted invitation may already have added you to the owner’s family group even though the account still displays the Personal entitlement.
If Family still does not appear after Personal expires
Ask the subscription owner to check their Microsoft 365 sharing dashboard:
- Confirm their Microsoft 365 Family subscription is active.
- Confirm your account is listed as a family-group member, not as Pending invite.
- Confirm a sharing slot is available; Family can be shared with up to five other people.
- Confirm the account listed is the exact Microsoft account you use for Services & subscriptions.
Joining the family group and receiving Microsoft 365 benefits are connected steps: the owner’s dashboard must show that sharing has started for your family-group account.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Troubleshoot sharing a Microsoft 365 subscription")
If the owner’s dashboard still does not show sharing for your account after the Personal plan has expired, the owner can remove the existing share and send a new sharing invitation. Microsoft requires the invitee to remain in the subscription owner’s family group, and an account already belonging to a different family group must leave that group first.[^4^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Share your Microsoft 365 subscription | Microsoft Support")
Refresh Office after the entitlement appears
Once Services & subscriptions shows the shared Family plan:
- Close all Office applications.
- Open Word or Excel.
- Go to File → Account.
- Select Update License if displayed; otherwise sign out and sign back in with the Microsoft account showing the shared Family benefit.
- Restart the Office application.
If OneDrive storage is the only item not updated, allow up to two hours after the sharing entitlement becomes active, then open Manage storage and refresh the page.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Troubleshoot sharing a Microsoft 365 subscription")
If the Personal subscription has expired, the owner’s dashboard confirms active sharing, and Family still does not appear in your account, contact Microsoft Support and provide the Personal expiry date plus screenshots of both accounts’ subscription dashboards. The support route is available through Get Help → Contact Support.[^5^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Microsoft 365 subscription sharing FAQs")
