I am not sure I'm missing it but the documentation doesn't seem to clearly state if the recipient of an SMS sent FROM Teams has to be in my tenant. Please advise

    Dear Sabine,

From my research, the recipient doesn't need to be in your tenant or use Teams. You can send SMS from Teams to any external mobile number that can receive text messages, as long as the number is in the United States (including Puerto Rico) or Canada. The requirements mainly apply to you as the sender:

    • License: You need Teams Phone with a Microsoft Teams Calling Plan.
    • Phone number: Your Calling Plan number must be a US or Canadian number with SMS enabled.
    • Registration: Your organization must complete the required Brand and Campaign registration.

Please note that SMS in Teams is designed for one to one business conversations, not bulk or marketing messages. Numbers from Direct Routing or Operator Connect currently don't support this feature.

I hope this helps. Looking forward to your reply.
