Recover the forgotten Microsoft account username first, then inspect each account’s subscriptions and use Investigate under payment options to trace the two card charges.
1. Find the forgotten email address
Use Microsoft’s username lookup with any recovery phone number or alternate email address you may have added:
- Open the Forgotten your Microsoft account username page.
- Enter your recovery phone number or alternate email.
- Request and enter the security code.
- Microsoft will display a masked username, such as
j*******@outlook.com. One recovery method may reveal more than one account.^1^
If that does not locate it, check places where the account may still be displayed:
- Windows 10/11: Start → Settings → Accounts → Email & app accounts
- Word or Excel: File → Account → Product Information → Belongs to
- Search all email inboxes for Microsoft receipts, renewal notices, or subscription confirmations.
- Try any alternate Outlook, Hotmail, Live, or Gmail address that you may have used as a Microsoft account.^2^
2. Identify which subscription charged each card
Sign in separately with every account you recover:
- Review Services & subscriptions and note each Microsoft 365 plan, renewal date, billing frequency, and payment method.
- Review Order history and compare the date and amount with each credit-card statement.
- If a charge is not present in that account’s order history, open Manage your payments, select Investigate, and search for another account using that card.
Microsoft specifically recommends Investigate when several payments appear on statements but only one appears in the current account’s order history.^3^
Do not post full card numbers, account email addresses, order numbers, or other billing details in this public forum.
3. Contact billing support if an account or charge remains unidentified
Go to Microsoft Support, enter unexpected Microsoft 365 charge, select Get Help, and then Contact Support. Provide the support agent with:
- The last four digits of each card
- Charge dates and amounts
- The description shown on each statement
- Any recovered account usernames or Microsoft order numbers
Only Microsoft billing support can review private account and payment records. If neither you nor anyone in your household authorized a charge, also contact the card issuer immediately; Microsoft advises notifying the payment provider when payment information may have been compromised.^4^
After support identifies both subscriptions, ask them to confirm cancellation and refund eligibility for the unwanted one before making changes.
