Use Sign in another way if it is offered; otherwise, contact the Kaskaskia College IT HelpDesk and ask them to require MFA re-registration for your college account.
The numbers currently displayed are for approving a sign-in through an Authenticator registration that should already be working. They are not the QR code or setup code, so trying to add the account by signing in creates the loop you described.
1. Check for another registered verification method
On the Microsoft sign-in screen:
- Select Sign in another way, Other verification options, or I can’t use my Microsoft Authenticator app right now.
- If available, choose a method that you previously registered, such as:
- Text message
- Phone call
- Security key
- Another Authenticator device
- After signing in, open Security info, add Microsoft Authenticator again, and remove the unusable registration if appropriate.
Microsoft recommends using another registered method when Authenticator is unavailable. If you have lost access to every method, your organization’s help desk must clear the settings.^1^
Kaskaskia College lists its IT HelpDesk as the support contact for login and myKC portal problems. You can contact it:
- Phone: 618-545-3098
- Email: [Email]
- Ticket site: help.kaskaskia.edu
- In person: Science & Technology Building, room ST-121, Main Campus^2^
Send or say:
I am locked out of my Kaskaskia College account because Microsoft Authenticator asks me to approve number matching through the same Authenticator account that I am trying to configure. I have no working alternative verification method. Please verify my identity and select Require re-register MFA for my account.
This must be done by the college because it is a school-managed account. An Authentication Administrator can use Microsoft Entra admin center → Entra ID → Users → select the user → Authentication methods → Require re-register MFA. That action removes the existing Authenticator and related MFA methods so that new ones can be registered at the next sign-in.^3^
Do not repeatedly remove and reinstall the app—the college’s existing MFA registration is stored with the account, so reinstalling the app does not clear it.^4^
3. Set up Authenticator after KC resets MFA
After KC IT confirms the reset:
- Start a fresh sign-in to your KC account on a computer.
- Follow the prompt to set up security information.
- Choose Microsoft Authenticator and continue until the computer displays a QR code.
- On your phone, open Authenticator and select + → Work or school account → Scan a QR code.
- Scan the QR code shown on the computer.
- Complete the test notification or number-matching prompt.
If scanning is unavailable, select Can’t scan the image on the computer and use Enter code manually in Authenticator.^5^
If KC policy permits it, register a second verification method afterward so that you have a fallback.
