Turn on Stop getting preview builds in Windows Settings; this queues the PC to leave the Windows Insider Program when its current build aligns with a public production release.
Stop future Insider builds without reinstalling
Windows 11
- Open Start → Settings → Windows Update → Windows Insider Program.
- Select Stop getting preview builds.
- Turn on the available unenrollment option and follow the prompts.
- Restart if requested.
Windows 10
- Open Start → Settings → Update & Security → Windows Insider Program.
- Set Stop getting preview builds to On.
- Follow the prompts and restart if requested.
This is the non-destructive option: when the device reaches an eligible production build, it leaves the Insider track without losing personal information.^1^
If you want to return to regular Windows immediately
First press Windows key + R, enter winver, and note the version and build number. Whether an immediate change can preserve apps and files depends on the Insider build currently installed.
If Settings cannot unenroll the current build immediately:
- Back up all important files.
- Download the appropriate Windows recovery image.
- Restore the PC to its original, stable operating system.
Microsoft lists restoration as the immediate alternative to waiting for the next production build, but it can require reinstalling Windows and applications.
If Settings → System → Recovery → Go back is available, it can return Windows to the previous version while retaining personal files, but it removes applications and drivers installed after the upgrade. This option is generally available for only 10 days. Importantly, going back alone does not remove the device from the Insider Program, so also enable Stop getting preview builds.
Avoid deleting Insider registry keys without first identifying the installed build; the appropriate exit method is build-dependent.
