Can't activate Azure for Students — "You're not eligible for an Azure free account"

2026-10-12T01:26:14.87+00:00

Hi everyone!

I'm a student at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute in Ukraine, and I'm trying to activate Azure for Students using my university email.

However, every time I try to register, Microsoft asks me to set up multi-factor authentication (MFA), and then redirects me to an error page saying:

"You're not eligible for an Azure free account."

I've checked my Microsoft account settings, and two-step verification is already enabled. I can access the Azure Portal, but I have no active subscriptions.

I've tried registering multiple times, so I'm wondering if my account was temporarily restricted or if there's an issue with student verification.

Has anyone experienced this problem or knows how to fix it? I'd really appreciate any help!

Ask your university’s Microsoft 365/Azure administrator to confirm that its tenant is registered and verified by Microsoft as an academic institution; if it is, request an Azure for Education eligibility review through Microsoft Support.

Completing MFA successfully only authenticates your sign-in. It does not confirm eligibility for the Azure for Students offer, so enabling two-step verification again will not resolve this error.

    What to do

    1. Contact your university IT department or Microsoft 365/Azure administrator. Ask them to verify:
      • The university tenant has completed Microsoft’s academic institution registration and verification.
      • Your university account belongs to that tenant.
      • No Azure for Students subscription is already associated with your account.
This is the resolution recommended for the same error occurring after institutional sign-in and MFA succeed. If the tenant is verified, the administrator should open a Microsoft support ticket for backend investigation. ^1^
    2. Confirm that you are using the correct identity. Start the Azure for Students registration while signed in specifically with the university-provided work or school account—not a personal Microsoft account that happens to use or forward to the same email address.
    3. Check for an earlier redemption under another identity. Azure for Students is limited to one subscription per eligible customer. Consider whether you previously registered with:
      • A personal Microsoft account.
      • An older university account.
      • The same email address represented as both a personal account and a work or school account.
Microsoft documents that the offer is nontransferable and limited to one Azure for Students subscription per eligible customer. Eligibility also requires full-time attendance at an accredited, degree-granting institution and verification through the institution’s email address. ^2^
    4. Request an account-specific eligibility review. If the university confirms that its tenant is academically verified and no subscription is assigned to your current account, open Azure Portal → Help + support → Create a support request. Request:

Azure for Students eligibility review. Institutional sign-in and MFA complete successfully, but registration returns “You’re not eligible for an Azure free account.” Please check whether an earlier Azure for Students eligibility or redemption record is associated with another Microsoft identity.

A previous redemption record cannot be reviewed or changed through the Azure portal or Microsoft Q&A; Microsoft Support must inspect the backend account records. ^3^

Include these non-sensitive details in the ticket:

    • Exact error text.
    • Date and approximate time of the latest attempt.
    • Confirmation that the portal shows no subscriptions.
    • Whether the university administrator confirmed academic tenant verification.
    • The session or correlation ID displayed on the error page, if available.
    • A screenshot with personal and tenant information redacted.

Repeated registration attempts are unlikely to change an account-level eligibility result. Since MFA is already working and the portal is accessible, do not reset MFA unless sign-in itself begins failing.
