Enable Windows 11 microphone access and allow the ChatGPT website in your browser; if you later want to disable it, block that website’s microphone permission rather than disabling the microphone for every app.
Enable dictation in ChatGPT
- Open Start → Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone.
- Turn on:
- Microphone access
- Let apps access your microphone
- Let desktop apps access your microphone
Browsers are generally treated as desktop apps, so they might not have an individual switch in the app list.^1^
- Open ChatGPT in your browser and select its microphone or voice button.
- When the browser asks for microphone permission, select Allow. Windows permission alone is insufficient for a website—the browser must also allow that particular site.^2^
- Speak normally and check whether ChatGPT transcribes your speech.
Test the microphone in Windows
If ChatGPT still receives no audio:
- Open Start → Settings → System → Sound.
- Under Input, select the microphone you intend to use.
- Select the > beside it.
- Under Microphone test, select Start test, speak, and then select Stop test.
- Select Play under Recorded sample. If necessary, increase Input volume.^3^
If Windows records your voice but ChatGPT does not, the problem is limited to the browser/site permission or ChatGPT rather than the microphone itself. In Microsoft Edge, revisit ChatGPT, select the site-permission icon near the address bar, and change Microphone to Allow.
Disable the microphone for ChatGPT
To block only the ChatGPT website in Microsoft Edge:
- Open Edge.
- Select Settings and more (…) → Settings.
- Select Privacy, search, and services → Site Permissions → All sites.
- Select the ChatGPT website.
- Set Microphone to Block.^2^
To disable microphone access for all desktop applications, go to Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone and turn off Let desktop apps access your microphone. This affects every listed desktop app, not only ChatGPT.^1^
Windows voice typing alternative
You can dictate into the ChatGPT text box without using ChatGPT’s microphone control:
- Click inside the message box.
- Press Windows logo key + H.
- Select the microphone in the voice-typing panel and speak.
Windows 11 calls this feature voice typing, and it uses online speech recognition.^4^
