Hello,

I'm urgently seeking assistance recovering approximately 32 GB of files that have disappeared from my father's personal OneDrive account following the expiration of his Microsoft 365 subscription.

My father suffered a catastrophic stroke in 2025 and has been incapacitated since, leaving him unable to manage his Microsoft account or subscription.

Current situation:

  • OneDrive now shows 0 GB of storage used.
  • His original laptop still displays approximately 16,700 files totaling 32.9 GB, but they appear to be online-only placeholders.
  • The OneDrive application is stuck in a continuous sign-in loop.
  • Attempts to open the files result in errors.

These files are extremely important. They include critical legal, medical, financial, and personal documents that our family urgently needs access to.

My questions:

  1. Is there any possibility of recovering these files through Microsoft's internal systems, backups, or an exceptional recovery process?
  2. Can Microsoft investigate what happened to the files and determine whether they are recoverable?
  3. How can I speak directly with a human OneDrive support representative or escalation specialist?

I have repeatedly attempted to contact Microsoft through its official support phone numbers, but the automated system disconnects without providing an option to speak with a representative. I have also been unable to locate a direct support email address.

My immediate priority is to speak with someone at Microsoft who can investigate this issue and assist with recovering these critical documents.

Time is of the essence, particularly because some of these files are needed for ongoing legal, medical, and financial matters.

I would sincerely appreciate assistance from Microsoft employee or moderator in escalating this issue. Thank you

    Hello Eddy,

I’m very sorry to hear about your father’s condition and the situation your family is facing with these important files.

The files shown on the laptop may be online-only placeholders rather than complete local copies. This would explain why their names and sizes remain visible, but the files cannot be opened when the corresponding cloud content is unavailable.

    Please take the following steps:

    1. Sign in to OneDrive on the web using your father’s exact Microsoft account and check My files, Recycle bin, and Personal Vault. Also confirm that this is the same Microsoft account previously used by the OneDrive application.
    2. If the deletion occurred within the last 30 days and the account currently has an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription, check whether Restore your OneDrive is available.
    3. Search the laptop outside the OneDrive folder for independently saved copies. Also check the Windows Recycle Bin, File History, external drives, email attachments, and any other computers that may have previously downloaded the files.

For now, avoid resetting or reinstalling OneDrive, deleting the OneDrive folder, using cleanup utilities, or making major changes to the original laptop. Preserve the device in its current state in case any files were previously downloaded and remain recoverable locally.

Microsoft’s documentation states that personal O neDrive files are normally recoverable from the Recycle Bin for 30 days, but files cannot be restored through the normal recovery tools after they have been permanently deleted from the OneDrive Recycle Bin. Therefore, recovery cannot be guaranteed.

Because the account now shows 0 GB and the issue may involve an account-level deletion, please contact Microsoft Support through the Microsoft Support contact page.

    1. Open a website link - Contact - Microsoft Support
    2. In the box below "We're here to help", type Microsoft 365, click "Get Help", and then click "Contact Support" below.
    3. In this section, you will need to sign in to your Microsoft account.
    4. Select "Microsoft 365 and Office" under Products & Services, select "Technical Support" as the category, and click to confirm
    5. You can select " Chat with a support agent in your web browser " to access the chat window.

I sincerely hope that Support can establish whether a recoverable copy still exists.
