I have Office 365 but the desktop version of Word, Excel, etc. requests an update. How is this completed?

    Which license are you using?

Are you using subscription, such as MIcrosoft 365 personal, family, etc?

Or perpetual license, like Office Home 2024, or Office Pro Plus, Standard, LTSC, etc?

Please provide the full and exact name of the license.

You also need to tell me what you are using it on, Windows 11, or macOS? If macOS, which OS version?

If Microsoft 365 is already active, the desktop apps usually just need a license refresh or update.

    1. Confirm the subscription is active by signing in to your Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page.
    2. Open a desktop app such as Word or Excel.
    3. Go to File > Account.
    4. Under Product Information:
      • Select Update License to refresh the license on the device. This is useful after a new purchase or renewal and can update the license immediately.
      • Then select Update Options > Update Now to check for and install Office updates.
    5. If prompted to save work so Setup can close Office apps, save the files and continue.
    6. After the update finishes, reopen the app and verify it is activated.

    Useful details:

    • The Update License button appears in Microsoft 365 apps beginning with version 2401. Its presence does not mean the license is out of date.
    • New purchases or entitlements can take up to 72 hours to appear automatically, so Update License can speed that up.
    • If the apps stay in reduced functionality mode or show as unlicensed, reconnect to the internet and sign in again.
    • If Office is not installed correctly, reinstall it from the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page.
