The instructions above apply to the overall Windows color mode. However, “background” could also refer to the desktop wallpaper or the appearance of a particular app, browser, or webpage, each of which may use a separate setting.

Could you let me know where the dark background is still appearing? If possible, please share a screenshot of that area, making sure to hide any personal information. This will help me point you to the correct setting without repeating steps that may not apply.

To switch Windows to a light background:

Open Start > Settings.
Go to Personalization > Colors.
Set Choose your mode to Light.

If it switches back to dark after a few seconds, check whether PowerToys Light Switch is enabled:

Open PowerToys Settings.
Go to System Tools > Light Switch.
Turn off Enable Light Switch.
Then return to Start > Settings > Personalization > Colors and set Choose your mode to Light.

Also check Accessibility > Contrast themes and turn off any active contrast theme if the display still appears white-on-black.
