    Hello Georgeann,

Since Excel is also opening OneNote unexpectedly, this may be an app, sign-in, or iOS sharing issue rather than a problem with the workbook itself.

First, open the App Store and update Excel and the other Microsoft 365 apps, then check Settings > General > Software Update. Older iOS or Office versions can enter reduced-functionality mode and prevent editing or saving.

Next, create a blank workbook and try saving it. If that works, open the original file on a computer and convert it to the current .xlsx format.

Also confirm that Excel is signed in with the correct Microsoft account and that sufficient OneDrive and device storage is available.

If the issue continues, please confirm whether you are signed in with a personal Microsoft account or a work or school account, and share the exact error message you receive. Also, open the Files app and check whether the workbook’s storage location, such as OneDrive or iCloud Drive, is visible and accessible.

On iOS, this is usually caused by one of these conditions:

    1. The file is locked for editing.
      • Make sure the workbook is closed on all devices.
      • If it was opened earlier on the same iPhone or iPad, wait a few minutes for the server to release the lock.
      • If another person has it open, wait for them to close it, open it read-only, or request edit access.
    2. The file is read-only or edit permission is missing.
      • In Excel, if the file opens in Viewing, select Viewing in the upper-right corner and use Request more access.
      • If possible, save a copy with a new name to a location where write access is available.
    3. The file is marked as Final.
      • This cannot be turned off from a mobile device.
      • Create a copy instead:
        • Open the file.
        • Tap the file icon.
        • On iPhone or iPad, tap Name or Duplicate.
        • Enter a new file name and choose a storage location.
        • Tap Save or Duplicate.
    4. Excel on iOS is stuck in the current file flow.
      • Force-close the app and reopen it:
        • Double-tap the Home button, touch the app, and swipe up.
      • If the app is unresponsive:
        • Hold down the power button.
        • When slide to power off appears, release the power button.
        • Press the Home button until the app quits.
        • Double-tap Home and swipe up again if it still appears open.

If Save As was denied, the most likely fixes are to save a duplicate copy to another location, close the file on all devices so the lock clears, or request edit permission.
