Using classic Outlook for Windows in business environments
Hi Dean,
Since you cannot send or receive business email, the issue may be caused by Classic Outlook being offline, a synchronization problem, or an email security policy applied to your account.
To resolve the issue, please work through the following checks:
- Disable Work Offline in Classic Outlook
- Open Classic Outlook.
- Select the Send/Receive tab.
- Look for Work Offline in the ribbon.
- If the button is highlighted, select it once to turn off Work Offline mode.
- Check the status bar at the bottom of Outlook. It should display Connected or Connected to Microsoft Exchange instead of Working Offline or Disconnected.
- Select Send/Receive All Folders, then send a new test email.
- Test the Account in Outlook on the Web
Sign in to https://outlook.office.com using the same business account. Try sending an email to an external address and ask someone to send a test message to you.
If email works in Outlook on the web but not in Classic Outlook, the problem is likely limited to the Outlook application, profile, or local connection. If the same issue occurs on the web, it is more likely related to the mailbox or your organization’s email configuration.
- Check Blocked Senders and Domains
- In Classic Outlook, select Home.
- Select More options (...) > Block, and then select Junk E-mail Options.
- Open the Blocked Senders tab.
- Check whether the affected sender’s email address or domain is listed.
- If you find it, select the entry, choose Remove, and then select OK.
- Check the Junk Email folder
- Open the Junk Email folder in Classic Outlook.
- Look for any expected or missing messages.
- If you find a legitimate message, right-click it and select Junk > Not Junk.
- If prompted, select the option to always trust email from that sender.
- Move the message back to your Inbox.
- Repeat this check in Outlook on the web to make sure the missing messages are not appearing there instead.
- Contact your organization's IT admin
If the problem continues, please ask your IT administrator to review the spam filter policies and security restrictions applied to your mailbox. They should check:
- Whether incoming or outgoing messages are being quarantined.
- Whether your mailbox has been restricted from sending email because of an outbound spam alert.
- Whether any sender, recipient, or domain involved is included in a blocked list.
- Whether an anti-spam policy, mail-flow rule, or security policy is rejecting, redirecting, or deleting messages.
- Whether your Microsoft 365 license and Exchange Online mailbox are active.
- Whether a message trace shows recent test messages as delivered, rejected, deferred, or quarantined.

I hope your issue gets resolved soon. Any updates would be greatly appreciated.
