Unable to transition from Windows 11 Insider Preview to Windows 11 Pro (I have a Pro license)

I was in the Windows 11 Insider Preview program and have done all the required steps to unenroll from this program.

I have a Windows 11 Pro license that I've activated but I have been unable to migrate from Windows 11 Insider Preview to Windows 11 Pro. Documentation stated that the system would not be able to move to Windows 11 Pro until the next major release came out. 26H2 is a major release and Windows Update does not see this release as an Update.

What do I need to do to migrate from Windows 11 Insider Preview to Windows 11 Pro without having to do a clean install of Windows 11 Pro?

(I tried using the Windows Installation Assistant to facilitate the upgrade but it tells me I'm on the latest available version)

My current Insider Release build is 26220.8283 so this situation doesn't apply

Then use the recommendation from Johnny55. The method he suggested is just right for your case.

Hello BW,

Am going to assume you already are on Build 26300.9550. Please press Start and type winver and post the popup window.

Try deleting the entire WindowsSelfHost Key. It will be rebuilt after a reboot:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost

_AllowTelemetry-SelfHostKey

Delete the entire Selfhost key and reboot your device. Check if the Windows Insider page asks you to join. You should be out of Insider unless you are using a 28xxx or 29xxx build.

After you delete the Host Key since you are on 26220.8283, dl the ISO image from here

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11

Mount the image file within Windows by right clicking on the ISO and run Setup.exe within windows thus doing a Repair install. This will let you keep all files, etc.

Regards,

Hello, BW.

26H2 is a major release and Windows Update does not see this release as an Update.

The current release build is 26300.9550. If the insider build has a version higher than this, then this update will not be applied. We must wait for the release build to be updated with a higher number than the insider one.

If the current Insider build is already the latest public build for that release, there is nothing further to migrate to right now.

A matching case for Windows 11 Pro on build 26200.8117 / version 25H2 states that when “Get started” shows the device is out of preview builds, that build is already the latest update for the public version of 25H2. In that situation, the device remains on the same build line and continues receiving normal public updates.

    For current Windows releases:

    • 25H2 remains supported and continues to receive updates.
    • 26H2 is being delivered in phases, so availability can vary by device.
    • Devices on 26H1 specifically do not have a path to the next annual feature update in the second half of 2026, but that limitation is called out only for 26H1.

    What to do:

    1. Open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program.
    2. Confirm the device is no longer enrolled and that Stop getting preview builds has already been completed.
    3. If Windows Update does not offer 26H2, wait for the rollout to reach the device. The release notes state that some updates are released through a gradual rollout, so not every eligible device sees them at the same time.
    4. If activation is the concern rather than the build label, use Settings > System > Activation and run the Activation troubleshooter. If the installed edition does not match the digital license, Windows must be on the matching edition to activate:
      • If there is a Windows 11 Pro digital license but Home is installed, select Upgrade to Windows 11 Pro in the troubleshooter.
      • If there is a Windows 11 Home digital license but Pro is installed, a clean installation of Home is required.

Based on the available information, there is no supported in-place action here to force a non-clean transition from an Insider/public-equivalent build to a different public build when Windows Update says the device is already on the latest available version. If the device is already on the public-equivalent build line, the practical path is to stay unenrolled and continue receiving standard updates until the next offered release appears.
