Unable to access Azure Dev Tools for Teaching with university account

I am a student at Grand Canyon University and need to access Azure Dev Tools for Teaching for a class assignment. I have tried signing in multiple ways using my university Microsoft account, but I am unable to access Azure Dev Tools for Teaching.

It seems like my university account may not be set up correctly for Azure access.

Is there a way to check why my university account is not giving me access to Azure Dev Tools for Teaching or what I need to do to get access?

    Hi @Luke W Mollineaux

Students typically access Azure Dev Tools for Teaching and related software benefits through the Azure Education Hub using their academic credentials.

You can try signing in at:

    Check your university email account

Student access is commonly unlocked based on the university email domain that has been configured for the institution's Azure Dev Tools for Teaching subscription.

    Make sure you are:

    • Using your official Grand Canyon University email address.
    • Signing in with the same account used for other university Microsoft services.
    • Not accidentally using a personal Microsoft account.

    Contact your university IT department

If sign-in succeeds but you still do not receive Azure Dev Tools for Teaching access, the university's Microsoft 365 or Azure administrator may need to verify that:

    • Your student account is active.
    • Your email domain is included in the institution's Azure Dev Tools for Teaching configuration.
    • Student access has been enabled for your account.

    Alternative: Azure for Students

If your assignment only requires Azure services, you may also qualify for Azure for Students, which provides Azure access after student verification and does not require a credit card.

Information to collect before contacting support

    Provide:

    • Your university email domain (for example, @gcu.edu)
    • The exact sign-in URL used
    • Any error message or error code displayed
    • A screenshot of the sign-in failure (if possible)

The exact error message is usually the fastest way to determine whether this is a licensing, account provisioning, or authentication issue.

    Thanks.

For Azure Dev Tools for Teaching, student access depends on the institution’s verified email domain and the student account being recognized as a Microsoft account tied to that university email.

    Try these checks in order:

    1. Sign in with the university email address only. If a personal Microsoft account was used before, try the university address instead.
    2. Use a private or InPrivate browser session. This can avoid cached sign-in conflicts.
    3. Confirm that the university email is a Microsoft account. Azure Dev Tools for Teaching requires every user to have a Microsoft account. If the university domain is associated with Active Directory, accounts under that domain are already considered Microsoft accounts.
    4. If the university account is not linked correctly, create or link a Microsoft account with the same university email address. If an existing Microsoft account is already in use, add the university email to it:
      • Go to the Microsoft account sign-in page.
      • Select Your info.
      • Select Manage how you sign in to Microsoft.
      • Verify identity.
      • Select Add email and add the university email address.
    5. Check whether the institution has enabled student access for that domain. In Azure Dev Tools for Teaching, students in the institution’s domain get access based on the university-verified domain used by the subscription administrator. If the domain is not set up in the subscription, access will fail.
    6. Contact the school’s subscription administrator. If credentials still are not recognized, the documented next step is to contact the subscription admin. The admin can verify whether the school’s domain is covered and whether student access is enabled.
    7. If the subscription administrator is unknown, use Azure Dev Tools for Teaching support. Support for sign-in, setup, and access issues is available through the regional Plans Support page.

If the issue is specifically that the account is not recognized during sign-in, the most likely causes from the documented guidance are:

    • the wrong account is being used
    • the university email is not linked as a Microsoft account
    • the school domain is not configured for student access in the subscription
