I got a new ssd and that means I need to reactivate windows. I don't know my windows key or have it backed up, and if I try pressing troubleshoot>i changed hardware on this pc recently, it just fails. It says i'm logged into the wrong account but I know 100% sure that I'm not.

    Hi, Daniel R

Since you’ve already checked the account, I’d try a direct activation attempt and check the installed license details instead of repeating the same troubleshooter.

Here are some suggestions you can try:

Open Start, type cmd, and select Run as administrator under Command Prompt. Enter:

    slmgr /ato

This asks Windows to attempt activation using the currently installed key. It doesn’t require you to know or enter that key, but it cannot replace a missing license. If it fails, note the exact error code and message.

    In the same window, enter:

    slmgr /dlv

This displays detailed information about the installed Windows license. Please reply with only the Description, License Status, and the error from the first command, rather than posting the entire window.

Those details will help narrow down the next step without assuming your account is wrong. Don’t post your full product key or account details here.

A new SSD by itself is not usually a significant hardware change, but a clean install can still leave Windows unactivated until the license is matched again.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Verify the installed edition matches the license.
      • In Windows 11, go to Start > Settings > System > Activation.
      • Confirm the edition is the same one previously activated, such as Windows 11 Home or Windows 11 Pro.
      • If the installed edition does not match the license, Windows will not activate.
    2. Run Activation Troubleshooter again.
      • Go to Start > Settings > System > Activation > Troubleshoot.
      • If the troubleshooter finds a valid digital license for a different edition, it will tell which edition must be installed.
      • Windows activation requires an internet connection, and the troubleshooter is available only when Windows is not activated.
    3. If the device had a digital license linked to the Microsoft account before the SSD change, use the hardware-change reactivation path.
      • In Start > Settings > System > Activation, select Troubleshoot.
      • If the troubleshooter cannot fix it directly, look for the link to reactivate after a hardware change and follow that path.
      • This path requires signing in with the same Microsoft account that was associated with the digital license before the change.
    4. If a product key exists, enter it manually.
      • Go to Start > Settings > System > Activation > Change product key.
      • Enter the 25-character product key.
      • If Windows was purchased from the Microsoft online store, product key records may be available in Microsoft account Order history.
    5. If Windows came preinstalled and the motherboard was replaced, automatic reactivation may not work.
      • In that case, a new license may be required.
      • If the OEM replaced the motherboard, the PC should reactivate automatically. If not, check for a COA card with a 25-character key.
    6. If the troubleshooter still says the wrong account is being used and reactivation continues to fail, contact Microsoft support for activation help.
      • The documented guidance is to contact customer support when the troubleshooter cannot resolve the issue.

    Important limitation:

    • If the previous installation/device entry was removed from the Microsoft account, the Activation Troubleshooter may not be able to locate the old device to transfer the license.
