I am unable to leave an external organization [Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed] from the My Account portal. The Leave button is available, but the authentication flow incorrectly reports "Your account has been locked" or "Something went wrong" despite successful authentication to Microsoft 365 using the same account. This leaves stale organizations in Teams because the self-service leave operation cannot complete.

    Hi Callie,

Good day and thank you for the clear and detailed description of the issue, as well as the extensive troubleshooting you have already performed.

Based on the information provided, it appears that the standard self-service process to leave the external organization is available, but the authentication step required to complete the operation is not succeeding, despite you being able to sign in successfully to Microsoft 365 services. This may be related to the status of your guest account within the external organization, tenant-level restrictions, or an issue affecting the self-service leave process itself.

With that in mind, here are a few suggestions you may wish to try:

1/ Attempt the process using an InPrivate/Incognito browser session

In some cases, cached authentication tokens or saved sign-in sessions can interfere with account-related operations. You may try:

    • Open a new InPrivate/Incognito browser window.
    • Navigate to the My Account portal and sign in using only your affected account.
    • Open Organizations and locate the external organization.
    • Select Leave organization and attempt the process again.

This helps eliminate potential browser cache or session-related issues that may affect the authentication flow.

2/ Contact the IT administrator of the external organization

If the issue persists, you may consider reaching out to the IT administrator of the external organization.

One possible reason for this is that the external organization has configured its tenant to prevent guest users from removing themselves. When self-service removal is not permitted, guests may need to contact the organization's administrator to be removed from the tenant.

Typically, when contacting the external organization's IT team, you may wish to ask them to:

    • Review the guest account associated with your email address in their directory.
    • Check the status and configuration of the guest account.
    • Confirm whether any tenant policies or restrictions could be affecting the self-service leave process and remove the guest user object directly from their tenant if appropriate.

3/ Ask the IT administrator to engage Microsoft Support

If your guest account cannot be removed through normal administrative actions, the external organization's IT administrator may wish to contact Microsoft Support for further assistance. Microsoft Support may be able to review the issue in greater detail and determine whether there is a service-side problem affecting the guest account relationship or the self-service tenant-leaving process.
