How do I Restore an Azure Database for MySQL Backup when Provisioning is Restricted in Region and Geo-Redundancy was Disabled?

Hello,

I have a Azure Database for MySQL Flexible Server that serves as the backend to a Wordpress webapp. While attempting to install a plugin, I encountered a database error. So, I restarted the Azure App Service and the aforementioned MySQL Flexible Server. The App Service rebooted without issue. However, the MySQL Flexible Server has repeatedly failed to start. The Self Heal option did not fix the option either.

Since I had backups turned on, I initially thought this was no big deal. However, when I attempt to restore the backup, I am prompted to create a new MySQL Flexible Server. After going through this process, the creation fails because "Provisioning is restricted in this region. Please choose a different region. For exceptions to this rule please open a support request with Issue type of 'Service and subscription limits' (https://aka.ms/mysqlcapacity) (Code: ProvisioningDisabled)" (this resource is in East US 2, it fails when I try EUS 1, 2, or 3). Well, the provided help documentation is out of date and, best that I can tell, there is no longer a way to submit a manual ticket for human review with the AI chatbot being of no help whatsoever.

When I went about creating the MySQL Flexible Server a few years ago, I did not turn on Geo-redundancy because it did not seem needed for the website of a small nonprofit. So, I can't restore the database server in a different region. This is in addition to not being able to start back up the original server. So, seemingly I have lost access to the database that is supposed to be backed up. ;_;So, what steps can I take to save the website of our small nonprofit? In all honesty, this entire process has been extremely demoralizing and I am at a loss.

Thanks for any help!

    Hi Tristan G,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A and thank you for posting your questions here.

    • Azure Database for MySQL Flexible Server relies on the region where it was originally provisioned. If Geo-redundant backup wasn’t enabled, restores are limited to the same region.
    • The error ProvisioningDisabled means Azure has temporarily restricted new MySQL Flexible Server deployments in that region due to capacity constraints.
    • Prevent this in Future: Enable Geo-redundant backup for disaster recovery.
