A family of Microsoft spreadsheet software with tools for analyzing, charting, and communicating data.
That built-in Repair Now prompt may not complete the full Office repair. The supported next step is to run an Online Repair for Office manually.
- Close Excel and all other Office apps.
- In Windows, right-click Start and open:
- Installed apps on Windows 11, or
- Apps and Features on Windows 10.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office in the list.
- Select it, then choose Modify.
- In the repair window, select Online Repair > Repair.
- Online Repair is the more complete option.
- Quick Repair is faster, but it only detects and replaces corrupted files.
- Follow the on-screen steps and let the repair finish.
- Restart the PC.
- Open Excel again and test the file.
If Excel still opens to a blank screen after the repair, the recommended action remains an Online Repair.
If Excel opens but a specific workbook fails, try recovering that file with Open and Repair:
- Open Excel.
- Select File > Open > Browse.
- Select the workbook.
- Select the arrow next to Open.
- Choose Open and Repair.
If Excel hangs or freezes during startup, test it in safe mode by running excel /safe. If it opens there, an add-in may be causing the problem.
Also make sure Office is fully updated. A known Excel file-access hang issue was fixed in version 16.34 and later.
