If the account is an adult account, use the Family Safety settings page first:

    1. Go to https://account.microsoft.com/family and sign in.
    2. Check whether a family group appears.
      • If no family members appear, the account is not currently part of a family group.
      • If a family appears, the account was added previously.
    3. If the account is in a family group as an adult member:
      • Select the member card.
      • Go to Control your safety settings access.
      • Select Disable all settings.

If the account is not part of a family group, or restrictions still remain on the PC, run the Family Safety refresh task on the device:

    1. Press Windows + R.
    2. Type cmd and select OK.
    3. Run:
         schtasks /run /tn "Microsoft\Windows\Shell\FamilySafetyRefreshTask"

    4. Restart the computer.

If the account is still being treated as a child, correct the birth date on the Microsoft account. The Family Safety troubleshooting guidance states that adults with the wrong birth date need to change the account information using the steps for I'm an adult, but Microsoft thinks I'm a child.

If the account is in a family group and the goal is to leave it completely:

    1. Sign in at https://account.microsoft.com/family.
    2. Select the three dots next to the name.
    3. Select Leave family group.
    4. Select Remove to confirm.

Important: leaving or being removed from a family group removes access to Family Safety features and can also remove access to shared products and services such as Microsoft 365 Family.

If removal is blocked because the account is a child account in the group, an organizer must first select Remove consent for this child's account, then Remove from family group.
